Megan's death/Jake's return/Andrew's mission (January 1992 - February 1992)
Shortly after the new year, Megan's condition took a serious turn for the worst and she was admitted to hospital, with Larry as her personal doctor. Andrew, his heart breaking, continued his daily visits while Viki maintained a silent vigil by her bedside. One day, however, Megan kidneys suddenly failed and she was hurriedly placed on dialysis. Larry told the family that, without a kidney donor quickly, Megan could die. Immediately, the family was tested for a possible match. There was only one: Viki. Without hestitation, Viki demanded that she undergo the surgery, despite the trauma her body had endured in the past year (most recently, her stroke). The transplant was completed and everyone braced to see if Megan's body would accept the new organ. It didn't.

Megan came down with a serious fever and began to hallucinate. As Andrew held her hand, Megan looked into his eyes and called him "Jake." She begged him never to leave her again. Andrew replied, "I love you, darling. But I have to leave you." Though Megan cried and begged him not to, Andrew told her he would go to the Middle East to bring Jake back to her. And that's what he did, getting the crucial information about the prison from Blair Daimler.

The family pulled together as Megan worsened. Bo convinced Sarah to visit her sister, though it put a strain on his marriage to Cassie. Clint supported Viki through the ordeal, though he was still hurting from Cord's death. Tina spent a lot of time with Megan as well. As Megan began to slip away, Viki began to tell her stories from the past - about her marriage to Joe Riley, about the births of Kevin, Joey and Jessica and about her bouts with Niki Smith. Megan enjoyed the stories so much she asked the rest of the family to join in, which they did. Bo and Clint told her about their early days in Llanview; Asa told her about his then-six wives; Max reminded her of their past romance; and Sarah reminded her of their childhood together. (All accompanied by flashbacks)

Meanwhile, in Jaba City, Andrew enlisted the help of a young revolutionary named Hasim, who arranged for a meeting with Jake's captor, General Gazi. Gazi and Andrew engaged in a mock war game, where the prize for winning was Jake's release. But when push came to shove, Andrew was unable to make the decision that would win him the game and he was thrown into Jake's prison cell. At first, Jake distrusted Andrew and accused him of being a spy Gazi planted in his cell. But eventually Andrew won him over with news of Megan, who was seriously ill. Jake and Andrew united to find a way out of the prison. Discovering a hidden tunnel in the cell, they quickly tried to make their escape. Only inches from freedom, Gazi and a follower stopped them at gunpoint. There was a brief fight and Andrew got hold of one of Gazi's guns. They were at a stalemate, both men training their guns on the other. Gazi decided to toy with Andrew and pointed his gun at Jake, urging Andrew to pull the trigger. When Gazi cocked his gun, Andrew instinctively raised his hand and fired. Gazi, a look of disbelief on his face, fell to the ground. As Andrew leaned over him, suddenly guilty and wanting to save him, Gazi pulled a knife and stabbed Andrew in the side. Then, covering his wound with one hand and fighting to hide his pain from Jake, the two made their escape.

In Llanview, Megan's time was rapidly slipping away. Nearly comatose, she asked Viki to tell her about Jake ... she wanted to die hearing Jake's name. Viki began doing so until the door opened and Jake himself walked in. Overflowing with tears, Viki welcomed her son-in-law home and left him with Megan. When she first heard his voice, Megan thought she was dreaming, but he quickly proved it was reality by reminding her of their wedding and the tree they planted on the lawn of St. James. The two shared a few bittersweet hours together. Megan was afraid that Jake would think she wasn't beautiful anymore, but he quieted her down, told her he would love her until the end of time and recited a Valentine he'd composed for her. As Megan began to slip away, Jake made her promise to stay awake a little longer. Then, telling Andrew to go and keep her company, Jake took off.

Megan thanked Andrew for bringing her husband home to her and told him she wanted her funeral to be full of laughing and dancing and people "wearing bright funky colors and music so loud the cops come." Andrew promised her he'd do his best and told Megan at last how much he loved her. Megan nodded and said, "I love you too, Rev." Then she planted a long kiss on his lips. Crying, Andrew said goodbye, promised they'd meet again and left. As the sun began to set, Jake returned telling Megan there was something outside she had to see. Too weak to move herself, Jake picked her up and carried her to the window, where she stood and looked down onto the hospital lawn. There, with cutout valentines hanging from the branches, was their wedding tree. As Jake promised her they would spent the rest of their lives together, Megan's head pitched forward and her Valentine slipped from between her fingers. At the age of 28, Megan Gordon Harrison had died.

Her funeral was held several days later, with heartfelt tributes by Viki, Clint, Renee, Tina, Sarah, Roger Gordon, Andrew, Jake and even Asa. Then Sheila stood up and sang the song that Megan had made Andrew promise to play - "Dancing in the Streets."

Alex escapes prison and marries Carlo (January 1992 - April 1992)
In jail for attacking Cassie, Alex Olanov hunted for another way to escape. She found it in Hank "The Cannon" Gannon (Nathan Purdee). Hank was looking for a way to prosecute Carlo Hesser and Alex promised she could deliver the evidence he needed - but she would only do so from the outside. Ambitious Hank was not sure Alex was completely sane, but when a judge found her to be so, Hank agreed reluctantly to the arrangement: her freedom for irrefutable evidence of Carlo Hesser's guilt. Released at last, Alex directed Hank to incriminating tapes hidden in a scarecrow at Carlo's cottage. Ecstatic, Hank wasted no time in bringing Carlo Hesser to court.

But Alex made her own deal with Carlo: she wanted money and power, and he could deliver both. Alex told Carlo that if he married her, she would destroy Hank's evidence against him and Carlo would be free. If not ... Carlo got the picture. He would go t o jail. Not at all happy about the arrangement, Alex and Carlo wed (now Alex, as his wife, was not required to testify against him in court). At the trial, when Hank went to play the incriminating tapes, the coutroom was filled with the lively beats of rock and roll. Carlo and Alex exchanged a knowing glance and Carlo was freed.

Carlo and Alex's marriage was a dark and stormy one. They became very passionate for each other, but both remained very strong-willed. Engaging in kinky sex, Alex refused to submit entirely to Carlo, as he did likewise. One night, after a brutal fight, Carlo received a call from his neice Stephanie Hobart, asking him to go to Max's house. Stephanie said that Renee and Asa had had a fight and now Renee was hiding there. Carlo's love for Renee caused him to do as she said. But when he arrived and made his way to the attic, Stephanie was waiting with a gun and pulled the trigger three times, shooting her uncle "dead." Why? That requires a little more explanation...

Sarah's drug problem and witness of a murder (February 1993 - April 1993)
After her sister's death, Sarah felt she had nothing left to live for. She was no longer married to Bo and felt like an outcast in Llanview. She turned to medication to ease her depression and began a job as Sheila's nurse advocate. Soon disturbing memories of her year in captivity began to surface. Going over the past with Bo, Sarah became convinced that she'd witnessed a murder, but she didn't know of who. Cassie became very jealous of Bo and Sarah's relationship, but he continued to see her. Sarah's drug problem worsened and Sheila had to fire her. With the memories intensifying and Carlo's presence in town very disturbing, Sarah relied heavily on Bo. Cassie finally called their marriage quits and divorced him. Sarah, sorry for her actions, ran off to a mountain inn. Bo met her there and began the process of detox. Sarah then remembered everything: she'd witnessed a man's murder. She'd heard his l ast words as he lay gasping for breath: "Scarecrow." When Carlo was found dead shortly thereafter, Sarah was the main suspect. Even Sarah couldn't remember if she'd done it - the drugs had induced amnesia. Sarah went to trial for the crime, defended by old pros Herb and Jon Russell (John Martin). Hank prosecuted her. The trial was long and took its toll on Sarah and Bo. She was eventually convicted, but Bo, convinced of his "Paradise"'s innocence, set up a trap to lure out the real killer. Stephanie was caught and the story was told...

The man Sarah had seen killed was Stephanie's father, JJ Hobart. JJ, whose codename was "Scarecrow" was also Carlo's brother and had accepted a job by the FBI to incriminate his brother. When Carlo learned of the plan, he shot JJ in cold blood. Stepha nie later learned of this and, furious, had killed her Uncle. Alex had arrived too late and took a traumatized Stephanie back to the penthouse, hiding the gun. Addie Cramer, who was also in Max's house at the time (!) had also seen the murder and in her schizophrenic terror, had pushed Julia Medina (Linda Thorson) down the stairs in her wheelchair.

After confessing this to the police, Stephanie was about to be transferred to a maximum security prison but Alex, out of loyalty to the Hesser family, kidnapped Stephanie and sent her off to Mexico, where she wouldn't be prosecuted. Sarah was freed and B o proposed again to her. Needless to say, she accepted. Meanwhile, Alex sought to maintain Carlo's mob empire.

Mortimer Bern comes to town (June 1992 - December 1992
Alex was stunned to open the newspaper one day to find a photo of Mortimer Bern, Egyptologist, staring back at her. Apart from a shabby grey clump of hair on his head, Mortimer was the spitting image of her dear, departed Carlo! (Whom she now carried around in an urn) Alex immediately brought Mort to town (actually, her lackey Bulge Hackman literally dragged Mort to Llanview). He brought with him his prized possessions, the jewels of Cleopatra, which Alex eyed with jealousy. Mort stuck around and set up an exhibit in the Llanview Museum, while Alex tried to convince him that he'd be the perfect substitute for Carlo ... the Hesser family nemesis, Moose Mulligan, was readying to take over the empire, and Alex had to fight back.

Meanwhile, Cain and Tina were becoming romantically involved - they had both been subjected to Alex and Carlo's wrath and were now looking for a way to get back at Alex. They decided to steal the Cleopatra jewels and set Alex up for the crime. But the plan backfired - Alex, posing as a cleaning lady, lured Cain and Tina into stealing the jewels themselves, then watched as the alarm sounded and they were caught. She made off with the jewels and Cain and Tina were left like mice in her trap. Mort was devastated when his prized collection was stolen (actually Alex was hiding them in the basement of the penthouse!), so at first, he was not at all receptive to Alex's demands that he shave his head, deepen his voice and engage in kinky sex. Cain and Tina, locating the stolen jewels, then retrieved them, planted them in Alex's penthouse and called in Hank Gannon. Their trap succeeded in freeing them from police custody, but because the whole situation was so complicated , and because Alex maintained that the two lovebirds had "set her up," no one knew who to press charges against.

As time passed, Alex gradually turned Mort into Carlo, first by making him appear the same, then by modifying his personality. When the newly-refurbished Mort appeared as Carlo, Moose Mulligan was shocked and horrified. Indeed, all of Llanview was left scratching their heads. Alex sat down and watched in glee as Mort began winning back Carlo's empire.

Blair Daimler wreaks havoc on Llanview (January 1992 - July 1992)
Working for the BANNER, Llanview newcomer Blair Daimler proved to be a tough nut to crack for many of the town's citizens. After sharing a romantic dance with Max at a New Year's Eve party, Max continued to pursue her, but she pulled away. He got rather close to her mother, Addie, and became convinced that there was some secret in Blair's past, involving Addie, which had prompted her to come to town.

Blair meanwhile, was busy burning bridges. Viki was enraged when Blair printed a supposedly "off the record" quote from a well-known politican, in an attempt to dig into his sordid private life. Fired from the BANNER, Blair's nose-for-dirt led Dorian to offer her a job at the INTRUDER. In almost no time, Blair became Dorian's trusted confidante and began working as a team with Dorian's boy-toy at the time, photographer Jason Webb. Yet, Blair soon let her true colors shine through. She was actually working against Dorian, attempting to gain control of the INTRUDER so she could run it into the ground. The motive? The secret came out months later. In the meantime however, Asa and Renee were in for rocky times - Asa was jealous of Renee's sadness over Carlo's passing and Renee was convinced that Asa was having an affair with Blair. She was right - when she discovered the truth, she divorced Asa and took the Palace Hotel in the settlement. Asa and Blair then married (see explanation below). Asa was hellbent on having another son, so Blair faked a pregnancy to keep the marraige going. But unfortuantely, she told her mother about the fake baby, and poor Addie blabbed the news to Cain, who then told Tina. When Blair suffered a fall down the stairs at the mansion, she was rushed to the hospital, where Larry discovered (shock!) Blair was not pregnant after all. He tried to explain the situation as a "hysterical pregnancy," but no one bought that, least of all Asa. Shortly thereafter, with Blair out of the hospital, Asa confronted her with the truth and then suffered a severe angina attack. Blair threw down her birth control pills and did nothing to help him; instead, she simply left. Asa and Blair divorced shortly thereafter.

Then, as if emotions weren't running high enough, in a confrontation between Blair, Dorian and Addie in Max Holden's attic, the truth about Blair's plot against Dorian was revealed.

Blair, after suffering a childhood of foster homes and neglect, had found her birth mother Addie in a nursing home and had broken her out. Addie, in her confused state, had told Blair about the Cramer family, claiming that her sister "Dori" had attacked her with scissors as a child. Blair naturally blamed Dorian for causing Addie's mental problems. But the truth was quite different. Dorian had been told by her parents that Addie had died of pneumonia, when in reality, Addie had been locked up in a mental hospital for stabbing Dorian with a pair of scissors. She then proceeded to show Blair the large scar that still remained on her shoulder from the incident. The emotional fervor of the confrontation led Addie to go berserk and she threw herself out the attic window. Though she nearly died, she recovered physically. The incident, however, prompted Blair to admit that Addie needed more attention than she could provide and had Addie committed to nearby St. Anne's psychiatric hospital.

Blair and Max ... and Luna ... and Asa (April 1992 - July 1992)
Max fell for Blair Daimler at first glance and at first tried to win her over through her mother, poor schizophrenic Addie. Blair, by nature extremely secretive, at first refused all contact with him and wanted him to stay away from her mother. Luna, who had also fallen for Max at first sight, watched in anger and disappointment as her Max continued to chase after Blair. At last, at the Holden farm in Sweetwater, Texas, Blair gave in to Max and they made love (According to Blair, it was her first time!). She then told him she loved him and Max asked her to marry him. Blair couldn't answer right then ... instead, she left Sweetwater for Llanview. When Max returned, he was stunned to learn she was about to marry Asa. Confronting her moments before the wedding, Max demanded an explanation. Blair told him she needed Asa's money to keep Addie in a mental hospital. Max ordered her to call the wedding off ... they made love on her wedding dress ... but Blair went through with the ceremony anyway. Heartbroken, Max turned his sights elsewhere ... to Luna.

Andrew fights homophobia (Summer 1992)
The spread of homophobia in Llanview coincided with two key events: first, the arrival of Andrew's father General Sloan Carpenter (Roy Thinnes), who had been diagnosed with Hodgkins disease and had come to town to make peace with his son. Andrew decided that while he had his father around he would try to make Sloan face the truth about his other son; Andrew's brother William, who had died of AIDS (William was also gay) The other key event was the appearance of trouble d gay teen Billy Douglas (Ryan Phillipe) who moved to town and quickly became friends with Joey. After he told Joey that he was gay, Joey was initially shocked and confused, but later accepted it and remained good friends with Billy. One day, Billy made a decision: he was going to come out of the closet with his parents - he went to Andrew for advice. Andrew urged the boy to follow his heart and placed a hand reassuringly on Billy's shoulder. At that moment, troubled young troublemaker Marty Saybrooke (Susan Haskell) glanced in the door to the rectory and saw Billy and Andrew. Marty had been trying to seduc e Andrew for weeks, but he had refused her advances. Jealous and furious to see Andrew caring for someone else when it appeared he didn't care about her, Marty formulated a horrific lie that turned the town upside-down. Going to Billy's parents, she told them th at Andrew was a homosexual and was making advances toward Billy. Horrified, the Douglases immediately took action, demanding Andrew's resignation. Once the rumor hit town, it spread like wildfire. Hate erupted everywhere - a rock was thrown through the community center ... Cassie, who was dating Andrew , received notes referring to Andrew as her "fag lover", Bigots threw dirt at Andrew and Sloan and spraypainted the rectory with graffiti. Sloan and the vestry board of St. James (Renee and Viki excluded) urged Andrew to come out and proclaim his heterosexuality. But, apart from maintaining that he did NOT tr y to molest Billy, Andrew refused to disclose that information. He argued that people's sexual preferences were nobody's business and that the right to privacy had to be respected. Furthermore, he arranged for the AIDS Quilt to come to Llanview and planned to add his brother's name to the quilt. This engraged Sloan and the members of the church who didn't want a "freak flag" displayed on the church lawn. But Andrew pushed on with his plans and Viki tried to get Sloan to accept them.

But the controversy refused to die out, as the new police commissioner asked lieutenant Maggie Vega (Yvette Lawrence) to name all the gay police officers in the squad. Andrew realized that the only way to end the hate was to get Marty Saybrooke to admit to her lies. But Marty refused to do so, turning self-destructive instead. The day of the Quilt ceremony, an angry parishioner confronted Andrew outside the rectory and beat him, even as Andrew held up his Bible to defend himself. Hours later, a bruised and battered Andrew arrived at the church, ready to move on with the ceremony. But there was a crowd of church members on the steps, barring his entrance. He was no longer allowed in the church, they said, because he was a "pervert" and was seducing innocent childre n. Billy screamed at his parents to let Andrew through and he, Joey, Cassie and Andrew marched into the church. Sloan followed in hestitantly with Viki.

Inside the church, Andrew launched into a stirring tribute about the right to privacy, about the destructive power of hate and about the poor people who died of the AIDS virus. By the end of his sermon, Andrew had won a good portion of the crowd over. He had not, however, won over Mr. Douglas, who urged the parishioners to take back their church. It was then that Billy Douglas stood up and announced that he was gay. His father screamed for him to shut up and sit down, but Virginia Douglas rushed to her son and promised that she'd love him forever. Andrew led the procession outside to the church lawn, where the AIDS ceremony was just getting underway. Among the tears of those who lost a friend or family member to AIDS, Andrew brought William's quilt to its new home. A hand fell on hi s shoulder. It was Sloan - he wanted to help lay the panel. Sloan then told Andrew all about his relationship with William. Sloan took William, as a boy, to the beach one day and taught him how to fly a kite. William was not a strong, athletic boy and the kite soon got caught in the trees. Sloan had been so enraged that h is son had failed to master something so simple as a kite, he had slapped him. From that day forward, the bond between father and son had been broken. Crying and begging forgiveness from his beloved son William, Andrew and Viki comforted him. Then, together, they laid the quilt.

Llanview did not magically heal after tht day - Billy still suffered bigotry at school - but Andrew had succeeded in turning Llanview from a town of fear and hate into a town of acceptance. After that day, Cassie and Andrew's relationship was stronger th an ever, while Sloan and Viki were beginning to acknowledge feelings for each other.

Kevin, LeeAnn, Jason and Rachel (Summer 1992)
Kevin and LeeAnn were married in early 1992 after Kevin learned she was pregnant with his child. For LeeAnn, however, living at Llanfair was anything but pleasant. Viki was always harping at her, and she felt completely out of place. During her marriag e, Jason Webb revealed a surprising fact to LeeAnn: he was illiterate. LeeAnn promised to teach him to read and began to spend long periods of time in his room above Wanda's Place. When they began to fall in love, LeeAnn refused to hurt Kevin by cheating on him: instead, she asked Kevin for a divorce. Kevin, h eartbroken, left town, while LeeAnn embarked on a tentative relationship.

But Kevin (now played by Kirk Geiger) returned before LeeAnn gave birth and was ready to get revenge. He told LeeAnn that he was going to get sole custody of their child, to the baby away from the clutches of a "whore" like LeeAnn (he believed that LeeAn n and Jason had had an affair while he and LeeAnn were married). He was also very jealous of Jason. At the custody hearing, Jason confessed to the court that the only reason he and LeeAnn had spent time together was because she was teaching him to read. The preliminary hearing was won by LeeAnn . But the second time around, she was not so lucky. Kevin told the court of LeeAnn's libidinous flings with Max and Jason and used all the underhanded tricks in the book to undermine LeeAnn. This time, he was successful. LeeAnn was not allowed so much as unsupervised visitation rights. Jason, furious at Kevin, snuck into Llanfair one night and brought little Duke back to his mother. LeeAnn and Jason went on the run together, while Kevin tracked them down with the help of Hank's newly arrived daughter, Rachel (Ellen Bethea). Rachel urged Kevin not to hold a grudge against LeeAnn and Jason. By the time Duke had been returned, Rachel's words had sunk in and Kevin agreed to unsupervised visitation rights for LeeAnn. Kevin and Rachel, meanwhile, emabarked on an intimate relationship.

Suede and Luna, Max and Death
Luna was charmed when she began to receive love poems from an young man who was a fan of her radio show, the LoveLine. Little did she know that the lyrics she was receiving were from an jailed convict by the name of Suede Pruitt (David Ledingham). Suede escaped jail and made his way to Luna, urging her to help him. He was innocent, he proclaimed. Luna consulted the goddess, who told her that Suede was telling the truth - that was all the proof she needed. Though Max continued to be suspicious of Suede, he and Luna launched into a close friendship. It was clear that the only way Suede would ever be free again would be if he proved his innocence. He was accused of murdering his wife Deborah years ago, but had felt all along that Deborah's father Marcus was the real culprit. Max, Luna and Suede journeyed to Deborah's family mansion in North Carolina and arrived at the house on a dark and stormy night. The events that transpired inside proved Suede's theory. A deranged Marcus admitted to killing his daughter - he had abused her as a child and when Deb married Suede, he had become insanely jealous and murdered her, letting Suede take the blame for the crime. Marcus pulled a gun and promised to shoot them all, beginning with Luna. Max flung himself in front of her and Marcus pulled the trigger. Max had been shot, but in that spli t second, Suede managed to shoot and kill Marcus.

Max was rushed to the hospital, with Luna by his side the entire time. He barely clung on to life. We then saw what was really happening inside Max's mind - he was being tempted by a seductress (Mary Kate Adams) - this woman was Death and Luna urged Max to fight her. Death coaxed and teased Max, urging him to kiss her (the kiss of Death), but Luna begged Max not to do it. As he continued to slip away, Luna used her psychic powers to get into Max's mind. Once there, she forcefully dragged Max from Dea th's clutches and home to safety. Luna awoke from her trance mentally drained, but Max had begun to come around. He healed slowly, but the bond between Max and Luna had finally been formed.

Tragedy hits Bo and Sarah (November 1992)
Lovebirds Bo and Sarah were destined for a tragic fate when Sarah returned from several months abroad with her father. Bo picked her up at the airport and promised her they would be married the next day. In the car on the way home, Bo presented Sarah with a wedding ring inscribed with the words "To Thee, In Paradise". Sarah oohed and ahed and told Bo how much she loved him - and would love him until the day she died. Then Sarah dropped the ring. She unbuckled her seat belt to pick it up as Bo was suddenly blinded by the lights of an oncoming vehicle. Bo tried to swerve, but he lost control of the car and plowed through a guardrail and into the Llantano River. Sarah was killed instantly but Bo refused to admit the truth. When she was laid to rest, Bo spent the night in the graveyard, sleeping by her headstone and mumbling "Paradise." It seemed like he was truly shattered. Until, that is, Nora Gannon came into his life ...

New Years 1992-1993
Max and Luna, now in love, held a New Year's party for their friends at the Palace Hotel, where Luna did her love-line episode live. Blair, in one last-ditch attempt to win back Max, crashed the party in a stunning dress she "borrowed" from Cassie. She begged Max to take her back, but he told her his heart was now with Luna. Heartbroken, Blair packed her bags and left town as Luna and Max danced the night away. Outside the ballroom, Bo attacked a drunken man (after all, it was a drunk driver who ran he and Sarah off the rooad, right?) Bo was arrested for disorderly conduct and Llanview newcomer Nora Gannon (Hillary B. Smith) accompanied him to the precinct. At midnight, Bo and Nora shared their first kiss.
