This is an introductory review of Italy's invasion of Libya in 1911 and the subsequent resistance it met. It takes a look at the background of Italy's then prime minister Giovanni Giolitti, and his decision to launch the Italo-Turkish War.
There is a general review of Edward Evans-Pritchard's work entitled The Sanusi of Cyrenaica. The author examines the unique circumstances which transformed a local religious order, the Sanusiya, into a formidable political force. This transformation was orchestrated by its spiritual leader Sayyid Muhammad Idris Al-Sanusi.
I am particularly interested to learn more about the events that ultimately led to the future King Idris taking over from his cousin Sayyid Ahmad Al-Sharif Al-Sanusi the leadership of the Sanusiya. The issue of succession, shrouded in mystery, has never been satisfactorily explained.
There is a preliminary bibliography and a brief chronology of events. If however you have comments or additional reading recommendations, do not hesitate to email me.
