Hollywood Stars Spotted At Avril Concert
|
CAPE TOWN - American
actress Michelle Rodriguez was among the hordes of fans who flocked to
the Bellville Velodrome at the weekend to see Canadian rocker Avril
Lavigne in concert.
"Tough chick" Rodriguez,
26, who starred in S.W.A.T, Girlfight and The Fast and the Furious, was
accompanied by friends who included actress Taryn Mannings, known for
her roles in 8 Mile, Crazy/Beautiful, White Oleander and Crossroads.
The lively group, who are in Cape Town to shoot Nicholas Mastrandrea's
The Breed over the next two weeks, arrived just after 8pm, parked their
silver Alfa in the VIP parking area and playfully bounced their way up
the stands to the concert area.
Rodriquez, comfortably dressed in a sleeveless top, a leather jacket and
jeans tucked into her tan calf-length boots, escaped unnoticed except
for a few ardent fans who asked for her autograph and photograph while
they waited for the star of the evening to appear.
A friendly Mannings said she had not seen many Cape Town sights and did
not know where they were filming because they were escorted to locations
at 6am every day.
She said they had been shooting the horror movie in George before coming
to Cape Town and that she was the third person to die in the movie,
which is about two brothers who wind up on a deserted island and come
under attack by a pack of smart and evil dogs.
After the concert, Mannings enthusiastically announced they were heading
for the Zula Sound Bar in Long Street for some hip-hop and R&B.
The group skipped down the stands as they left the Velodrome, singing
snatches of Lavigne's songs, and had a brief sand fight in the long jump
pit before heading for the city.

'Punk Princess' Keeps Crowd Waiting For
Hour
CAPE TOWN - The crowd was electric with pubescent
energy, becoming increasingly restless as the moment of her arrival came
closer. The audience of 9 000 - average age 12 - had waited nearly an hour
between SA teen-punk band Tweak's performance and the arrival of 20-year-old
Canadian "punk princess" Avril Lavigne.
Older members of the audience spent their time overhearing musings about
"that cute guy in the 10th grade" and trying to look deadpan during
countless Mexican waves of face-pulling at the roving camera.
Finally the lights in the packed Bellville Velodrome dimmed and thousands of
high pitched voices began screaming, "Avril! Avril!".
This was the third leg of her South African tour, which started in Durban
last Wednesday, moved on to Johannesburg and ended in Cape Town on Friday.
Unlike the large contingent of parents and a few lanky school boys,
thousands of screaming weenyboppers jumped up and down - partly to see the
stage.
The fans were there in full teen-rebellion paraphernalia: black studded
belts, tiny black fingernails, neon pink sweatbands, tight jeans, although
some 15-year-old glamour-girls instead went for pointy stilettos, diamanté
and dainty Chanel look-alike handbags.
Even earplugged moms and dads joked about how they were told to dress,
wearing their most fashionable items and gelling their hair for the
occasion.
In an explosion of drums and swirling lights, the suspense ceased suddenly
when the petite rock star appeared on stage. Long blonde hair in her face,
seeming almost timid, she began singing her first song.
Joined by her all-male band, Lavigne soon began to tap into the teenage
angst her fans identify with, singing more loudly, headbanging and romping
from one side of the stage to the other.
"This is my first time in Africa and it's been really cool! We went on
safari. I don't know what the place is called," she told the audience in a
rare moment of interaction.
Although the singer has a reputation of singing off-key, she pleased the
sing-along crowd with a passionate multi-faceted performance, singing, and
playing guitar and the piano. Her best was probably a cover version of
Greenday's American Idiot, where she played the drums.
Despite the hardened exterior, the repertoire was mostly love songs. "He's
just a boy, she's just a girl and they rock each other's world," the lyrics
of hit song Sk8er Boi rang out.
The sound in the golden circle was overwhelming, but complaints of poor
sound quality were heard from the back.
Within 65 minutes it was all over, in time for the audience to be in bed
before midnight.
Lavigne disappeared after the show, although members of her entourage were
spotted in the VIP lounge. Also there were Taryn Manning, who starred with
Britney Spears in Crossroads and Michelle Rodriguez, who starred in
Girlfight.
"We're shooting a film here called The Breed, about friends who go on a road
trip and get attacked by a pack of wild dogs. I'm eaten first," Manning said
cheerfully.

Avril Lavigne Rocked Durban
DURBAN - Avril Lavigne burst onto stage at the
Westridge Stadium, with a crowd pleasing performance that left fans in tears
of exhilaration.
South African band, Tweak, performed the opening act, with old and new hit
songs that tantalized the fans eager to see Lavigne. Once the crowd had
warmed up to the local band, they grew restless in anticipation of seeing
their international star. Lavigne appeared over half an hour late, in
ordinary takkies and jeans to a screaming audience.
She opened the concert with “Unwanted” off her 2002 album Let Go. She later
belted out songs from her second album, Under My Skin.
The most spectacular part of her concert perhaps, was the fact that she had
chosen to sing a song from her favourite band, Green Day. Their latest album
and title song is called American Idiot. She simply requested everyone to
sing along and then jumped all over the stage, screaming, “I love you
Durban, it's so good to be here.”
Lavigne changed instruments three times during her performance and even
talked a little about what inspired the lyrics to her hit song “Nobody's
Home”. She claims that this was a song about a girl she knew back home, that
was going through a hard time.
At some point she took over the drums and showed the crowd just what she's
capable of.. One of her fellow guitarists sang, “Song 2”, by Blur.
The atmosphere was incredible! The crowds were mainly young teenagers and
children of ages up to seven. There were some odd looking grown men, but
hey, it's Avril Lavigne, a girl whose lyrical expression has reached fans
globally. Perhaps one of her greatest songs that compliment her personality
is “anything but ordinary”.
Welcoming banners read, “Girls rule the world and we love you Avril”. A
crazed fan even threw one of the devils horns she was wearing at Lavigne.
Lavigne smiled and even wore it on stage, showing her fans that she didn't
mind being ordinary after all.
She was superb throughout her entire 90 minute performance and was cheered
on by the deafening roar of the crowd when she sang. As tiny as she is, she
was one hell of a performer. She rocked Westridge yesterday and did it with
style.
Avril Rocks Family Crowd At Westridge
SOUTH AFRICA - Life's like this: you fall and you
crawl and you break and you take what you get - especially if you're at an
Avril Lavigne concert. The international pop princess got under the skin
of a throng of fans of all ages at Westridge Stadium last night.
In a haze of white light, the petite Canadian singer pranced on stage in
jeans, tackies and a tight T-shirt. Her hair, down to her waist, was
thrown around as she belted out new releases, stamping her feet to the
pulsating sound.
South African rock outfit Tweak, Lavigne's supporting act, lived up to
their reputation as a top act and had the capacity crowd on its feet.
Lavigne, who has a massive teen following, also had adults and little
children clapping and chanting, making the rock spectacle seem like a
family outing. She will complete her South African tour with a concert in
Cape Town on Friday.

Avril Lavigne has topped yet
another chart, coming in at #1 on Google's Most Searched Teen Queen tally!
She beat out Lindsay Lohan and Hilary Duff to grab this position. More info
available
here.
According to IMDB, Joel Madden
of Good Charlotte will star in Sk8er Boi, the movie based on Avril's hit
single. Ah yes, always a stellar idea for improving the integrity of a flick
- put a Madden brother in it. Other people slated to appear include Ashanti,
Nicole Richie, and Omarion. Avril has never shown much enthusiasm over the
making of this movie and as of yet she's wanted no part in it. You can find
out more
here.
A large assortment of Avril
photos have been uploaded to the Galleries this past week. A few days ago,
Avril played a concert in Milan, Italy and thanks to AvrilMidia.com and LFI

An article printed in todays
The Ottawa Sun suggests that sex-god and super-fab drummer Matt Brann's days
with Avril Lavigne's touring band might be numbered. Matt, the last remaining
original band member, has drummed for Avril since 2002 and co-wrote Freak Out
with Avril for Under My Skin. According to the article, Kenny Aronoff who has
worked with The Smashing Pumpkins, Alanis Morrisette, Bob Dylan, Ashlee
Simpson, Hilary Duff, and was tapped to drum on My Happy Ending and Fall To
Pieces will join Avril for her summer tour. Find out more

Happy Birthday "Under My Skin"!
If you, like me, just finished watching the ALIAS season
finale, chances are you won't be able to sleep tonight... Or for the next 6
months until the new season starts for that matter. Don't worry, we'll attempt
to keep you occupied with enough Avril news until then to keep your mind off
the ominous words, "For starters, my name's not Michael Vaughn." If you have
no clue what any of that means, just smile and nod your head a bit. Anyways,
speaking of landmarks in time, today marks the one year anniversary of the
North American release date for Under My Skin. It's pretty impressive when you
look back at what Avril has accomplished this past year: A #1 album across the
world, a series of hugely successful singles, a consistently sold-out
worldwide tour, not to mention that Bandaids has grown by 30,000 members since
then too. Anyways, forgive me while I get sentimental for a moment, but much
thanks to all the people who are a part of this site - to our incredibly
dedicated staff, our devout members, and of course to Avril for making all
this more than worth it. Here's to another year of awesomeness! If you feel
like sharing in the schmaltz, click

Avril Lavigne stalker jailed
Seattle, WA, May. 5 (UPI) -- A Seattle computer technician obsessed with Canadian rock singer Avril Lavigne has been sentenced to 30 days in jail for stalking her.
James Speedy, 31, initially entered a plea of innocent in court, but during testimony, admitted to stalking the 20-year-old, "Celebrity Justice" reported Thursday.
Prosecutors said he had "relentlessly" pursued the singer and had been arrested once before and ordered to stay away from Lavigne and her family. However, he admitted to the judge he showed up at a mini-concert the singer was giving at a Seattle mall. He was arrested before she went on stage.
Speedy also testified his wife encouraged him in his pursuit in the hopes he would get over it.
