This is a story about a woman who determined to go against her parents’ will and gave up a secular marriage in pursuit of the love not blessed by everyone else. Was it a rebellion or due to sympathy? Was it originated from an irresistible indulgence of affection, or did she fall for a call of perfection in her deepest heart? Let us now listen to Ma Wen Tsai, the only survivor in this story, to give us his account. For generations there has been interpretation from different perspectives about the story ‘Butterfly Lovers’. Here Da Feng’s Musical ‘Butterfly Lovers’ presents us, in an approach contrary to the traditional viewpoint, a revisit and analysis to Liang’s and Zhu’s spiritual worlds. It will lead us to explore the messages hidden underneath the story plot and reveal the subtle links between Chinese folklore and modern western philosophy. ‘Butterfly Lovers’ is the first Chinese musical that combines modernism and tradition. The idea behind this composite creation is to forge the elements of western opera, musical, and traditional Chinese folklore into a brand new language that will touch the souls of contemporary audiences.
