Amino Compounds
Introduction
- amines are released from bacterial decomposition of protein
e.g. in rotting fish and decaying carcasses
Basic characters of amine
- their ability to donate the lone pair electrons on nitrogen to a hydrogen ion
- salt formation
Uses of certain amines
- as drugs:
(1) antihistamine - relief allergic disorders
(2) Tranquillizers - relieve anxiety, excitement, restlessness or even mental disorders
(3) Analgesics - relieve pains such as headaches
- plastics: H2N-(CH2)6-NH2 for nylon
- inhibitors: preventing deterioration of rubber
- Dyes
- softeners
Amino Acids and Proteins
- Zwitterions
- Peptides
- Insulin must be injected and not taken orally because it will be hydrolysed in the starch by acid
