Introduction

- amines are released from bacterial decomposition of protein

  e.g. in rotting fish and decaying carcasses

Basic characters of amine

- their ability to donate the lone pair electrons on nitrogen to a hydrogen ion

- salt formation

Uses of certain amines

- as drugs:

  (1) antihistamine - relief allergic disorders

  (2) Tranquillizers - relieve anxiety, excitement, restlessness  or even mental disorders

  (3) Analgesics - relieve pains such as headaches

- plastics: H2N-(CH2)6-NH2 for nylon

- inhibitors: preventing deterioration of rubber

- Dyes

- softeners

Amino Acids and Proteins

- Zwitterions

- Peptides

- Insulin must be injected and not taken orally because it will be hydrolysed in the starch by acid
