History of the St
Johnˇ¦s Cathedral -
ˇ@
When
St Johnˇ¦s
opened for divine service in 1849, it had just been granted the status of
cathedral. The final design was prepared
ˇ@
in the Surveyor Generalˇ¦s Office when
Charles St G. Cleverly was Surveyor General and built with local labour. The
architectural style is a plain
ˇ@
and unadorned
adaptation from 13c Early English and Decorated Gothic, the popular revivalist
style for churches at the time.
ˇ@
The chancel was
shorter before the extension of 1873 took it to the present length . During the Japanese
occupation of
Hong Kong
ˇ@
from 1941 to 1945 ,
the Cathedral was converted into a club for the Japanese. Fortunately , some of
the fittings had been
ˇ@
removed before this
happened but none of the pre-war stained glass windows survived , many of which
had been
ˇ@
designed by the
English firm of William Morris. The cost of restoration after the war was met by
donations from the community .
