The Upper Deck of the Bus

Oh! Look at him! My heart shouted in excitement. Another angel from the heaven!

The rear row of the upper deck of the bus sat me, a sixteen-year-old, not-very-good-looking boy. Actually I was not gay, but that boy about my age attracted me in an inexplicable way. He was not handsome, but he was good looking. He was not large but he was tall. The atmosphere around him was not uneasiness but the air surrounding him was always sparkling. He was not studying in a famous school but the banding of his school was band one.

I did not know him in person. I doubted if he had even noticed my existence. He was the glorious sun while I was only one of the tiny shimmering stars. He was unique.

Every morning I went to school by the bus that arrived at 7:16am. On the 4th of September 2002 (how could I forget such a memorable day?), when I first met him, I was drawn to him at first sight. He climbed on the bus at 7:19am. He would sit in the second row from the front, right side of the bus. Every time he reached the upper deck, he would head for that seat without hesitation. He would put down his school bag by the windows before sitting down. Then, he would stare through the windows, deep in thought. He kept that pose until 7:32am, when he had to get off the bus. He would gently pick up his bag and press the bell for the next stop. He would slowly sink into the lower deck and eventually appeared out of the window. Every day he would fly into his school elegantly. Oh! Everything was so beautiful in him.

These were my morning observation every school day. Apparently he still did not become aware of me till 6th of June 2003.

In that morning he unusually took a look at the back side of the bus before going for his seat. I met his eyes. My face was burning so fiercely that I picked up my school bag to pretend that I was looking for something until he looked away. A little girl sitting on the same row as me stared at me in wonder. I was sure that my face was bright red at that time. Did he know I blush because of him? I sneaked a peek at him. He was gazing out of the window again. Was he thinking of me? I could not hide a grin when I thought of this. The girl by my side went on beaming at me as if I were an alien. I gave her a threatening look but she smiled in return. Oh! Never mind her.

Would he take another look at me? It was now 7:30am. He suddenly stood up. He lifted up his bag and was going to go downstairs. Then he stopped to glance at the back of the bus. His gaze rushed straight through my pupils. Unexpectedly he raised his hand and said hi! I could no longer suppress my eagerness. I was shooting up my hand when one girl sitting two rows in front of me sprang up and raced toward him. She was bouncing toward him. Within a second the girl crashed into him and kissed him on the cheek! Oh! It was as if I suddenly woke up from a fantasy. He had a girlfriend. Desperately I lowered my hand with a smallest possible movement. The girl next to me whispered, "Oops!" I glared at her angrily.

From that day onward, I went to school by minibus.
