Hardcore in HK
In HK I think hardcore has been around for a very short time. Riz formed King Ly Chee the first hardcore band, added Chinese lyrics then together the band started handing out handouts at their shows. Since then some people have come to get a better idea of what hardcore is. Guan 36 formed and Hong Kong had its first straight edge hardcore band! Promoting straight edge in Hong Kong. Now another hardcore band will begin playing their first few shows with a bass player who has become a vegan (because of hardcore). Now some people are really trying to understand what is hardcore!
In HK, band sound consists mainly of metal, rock, rap…etc., very few hardcore bands.
Actually hardcore in these past 2 yrs has begun to be understood and actually accepted. In the beginning, we could only find out about hardcore on-line, but now it’s better, at least we have local hardcore bands, its not much just few. They are King Ly Chee, Guan 36 & 5 Disciples (Bustle, Hardpack are playing punkrock). They are all just like a big family hanging out together with similar goals of wanting to do something for hardcore. Once they put together rice boxes to hand out to street sleepers. This proves that they really want to do something for society from their hearts!!
I’m not sure if there any other bands in hk who are playing hardcore, but I think these bands really know about hardcore. They are not very big fans of those people who are like “I like hardcore…” but its all talk and they don’t actually do anything!! Just listen to some songs and say they are hardcore kids!!!
But I’m not saying only hardcore is positive !NO!!! Just don’t like when someone isn’t involved in the hardcore scene and says they are hardcore kids! I’m not saying that only Hardcore is good music. NONONO - pls don’t misunderstand!!
I have noticed that many other Asian countries have some hardcore bands now. They’ve all begun to build a bigger hardcore scene, but look at HK, hardcore is just beginning still only a little people know!!
HK’s indie bands have been around for a long time but everything is still so “underground” although they play so well. HK people still think playing band is not a good job! Its so disappointing!! Because HK people are so “slow”.
HK is a place where they always talk about $$ not like other countries where the bands can play music all day & feel like that is their job!! But in HK, only very few people can do it as a job! They usually have to have a real job, earning some $$ for the band so that they can do their music! I just know Lam Kei and LMF are signed to big record companies & so they can pursue music as a full time job!! Although they are not playing pure hardcore, but this is the life of bands in HK!
