You've probably heard of Iams and Eukanuba if you're a pet owner. These two brands are among the "best" and most well-known dog food brands available today. However, these two pet food manufacturers (both owned by Proctor & Gamble) participate in animal testing. How can a company that seemingly strives to promote health care and nutrition for your pet practice such cruelty? I have a hard time understanding this. But one thing is for sure, I am boycotting these companies- as well as Proctor & Gamble- and I hope you consider doing the same. Here are some Q & A's to help you understand the severity of this topic: What makes animal testing cruel? Can you imagine your dog or cat contained in a small cage it's entire life while being tested on? At the website belonging to Uncaged Campaigns, they state why the Iams company's animal testing practices are cruel: "The IAMS Company funded and participated in laboratory experiments on hundreds of animals that have caused kidney failure, obesity, malnutrition, liver damage, severe allergic reactions, stomach inflammation, diarrhea, severe skin disorders, lesions, skin wounds, and other painful illnesses; and animals have been kept in barren dungeon-like conditions. Dogs have been force fed vegetable oil, had chunks of muscle removed from their thighs, and been 'de-barked'..." For several months an undercover investigator from PETA witnessed these cruel forms of animal testing and caught it on video at Iams laboratories. However, I don't believe "animals health" negates this kind of treatment, especially when there are other brands out there, just as good and often thought of as better- that don't participate in animal testing. Animal rights activists are calling on Iams and Proctor & Gamble to carry through with alternative, and humane methods by putting a stop to laboratory animal testing, and rather testing in humane, in-home ways of researching foods with owners that volunteer their pets to safely test new foods- both heatlhy and safe; rather than keeping helpless animals in cold concrete cages with no exercise or stimulation- and often no pain medications or veterinary care whatsoever. If Iams really cared about animals, they would find a way, as many other companies have done, to find alternatives. What Should I Feed My Pets?
