It will be Cecilia Cheung Bak-Chi versus Cecilia Cheung Bak-Chi at the Easter holiday box office next month as EVERYDAY IS VALENTINE'S DAY (left) -- Cheung's romantic comedy with Leon Lai Ming -- will be going up against MASTER Q 2001 (centre) -- a live action / animation version of the popular HK comic series. EVERYDAY IS VALENTINE'S DAY tells the story of a conman played by Lai who falls in love with the daughter (Cheung) of a gambling addict (Ng Man-Tat). Meanwhile, MASTER Q 2001 has Cecilia Cheung playing the girlfriend of a CID investigator played by Nicolas Tse Ting-Feng. Sadly, the mother of Cheung's character objects to the relationship. As a result, the young lovers run away but are involved in a traffic accident where they both lose their memory. Luckily, Master Q and his sidekicks are there to help re-unite the star-crossed lovers.
In the new movie THOU SHALL NOT COMMIT (YIK TIN JE; trans. THOSE AGAINST HEAVEN), Maggie Cheung Ho-Yi, Anthony Wong Chau-Sang and Lee Wing-Ho play characters involved in an incestous love triangle. Mistreated by her mate (Wong), a woman (Cheung) has an affair with a man (Lee) who turns out be her son. When the truth is discovered, tragedy ensues (right).
Shooting of Benny Chan Muk-Sing's new film CHI CHING HO DOI (lit. THIS LOVE CAN WAIT) continued yesterday on location in Japan. With a budget of US$2 million, the film tells the story of a tycoon who causes tragic results when he objects to her daugther's boyfriend. Simon Yam Tat-Wah plays the tycoon. Edison Chen Kwoon-Hei and Amanda Strand play the siblings of the ill-fated couple. Chen plays the brother of the objectionable boyfriend while Strand plays another of the tycoon's daugthers. LUNCH WITH CHARLES, the Canadian film in which HK producer Raymond Wong Bak-Ming invested HK$10 million, will be released in late March. The film was shot in Canada over several months last year and stars Lau Ching-Wan, Teresa Lee Yi-Hung, Nicholas Lea (Kryczek from THE X-FILES) and Canadian musician / actress Bif Naked. The movie tells the story of romance between couples that pairs Lau with Bif Naked and Lea with Lee. Rumours had circulated that Lau Ching-Wan sings the theme song for the movie but yesterday, in a phone interview with Oriental Daily, Lau's assistant denied the possibility: "Ching-Wan sings a song in the movie but it is a part of the story. He does not sing the theme song."
To help deal with the large amount of English dialouge in the film, Lau brought along his wife Amy Kwok Oi-Ming so that she could be his English coach and interpreter. Related images (courtesy Oriental Daily News):

Rumours abound that veteran actor Cho Tat-Wah (left; file photo) will be presented with a lifetime achievement award at this year's Sixth Annual Golden Bahunia Film Awards. The eighty-five year old actor has appeared in close to one thousand films since his start in the business in 1931. His career peaked in the mid-1960s with the classic film YU LOI SUN JEUNG (lit. YU LOI MYSTICAL PALM; centre). In the 1990s, Cho retired to England with his wife Chu Yi-Wah. He returned to Hong Kong last year after Chu -- whom he married in 1938 -- passed away following a lengthy illness.
Diana Pang Dan (right) added some glamour to the Hong Kong premiere of FEMALE SOCCER PLAYER NO. 9 the night before last. Also on hand was TVB actress Michelle Yip Suen. In other stars-about-town news, Sherming Yiu Lok-Yi and Leung Suet-Mei attended the grand opening of the LA Disco the night before last in the Wanchai district. Yiu has been busy these days working on the TVB series A STEP INTO THE PAST. Related image (courtesy Apple Daily):

Ada Choi Siu-Fan and Bobby Au Yeung Jun-Wah continued to work on their new TVB series ARMED REACTION III yesterday. On location in Kowloon, a scene in which Choi's undercover cop character is led away by a loan shark (played by Ching Siu-Lung, Tony Ching Siu-Tung's brother) was shot. The scene provided some unfortunate imagery for Choi as reporters later asked if she had ever had similar contact with a loan shark in real life because of her mother's notorious gambling problem. To that, Choi bluntly replied: "I'm a law-abiding person without bad habits, why would I even come into contact with people from the crime underworld?"
By contrast, the day was less taxing for Bobby Au Yeung Jun-Wah as he was able to nap for five hours as he waited for his scenes to be shot. Related images (courtesy Apple Daily unless otherwise indicated):

In other television news, TVB announced yesterday that the remake of HEAVEN SWORD AND DRAGON SABRE starring Lawrence Ng Kai-Wah and Gigi Lai Gi will finally hit the airwaves upon the conclusion of REACHING OUT later this month. Shot in 1999, the series has been sitting in TVB's archives for the past year waiting for a timeslot. TVB's first series centred on the world of horse racing, ON THE TRACK OR OFF, will take the place of DUKE OF MT. DEER 2000 when it finishes its run. ON THE TRACK OR OFF stars Ada Choi Siu-Fan, Bondi Chiu Hok-Yi and Steven Ma Jun-Wai. Related images:

Fresh off of her success in CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON, Zhang Ziyi has joined Jackie Chan in Las Vegas for work on RUSH HOUR 2. In two weeks, CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON will be up for many prizes at the Academy Awards ceremony. Asked if she will be attending, Zhang revealed that she would and that she hoped that directed Ang Lee will win the Best Director award. Further, Mainland media have been citing CROUCHING TIGER HIDDEN DRAGON's international acclaim as a selling point for the movie as it makes a second run at Asian box offices. In response, Zhang commented: "Awards and acclaim are just the icing on the cake. The most important thing is that the people like the film. If they don't, awards are useless."
In related news, rumours have circulated suggesting Zhang Ziyi will be joining Tony Leung Chiu-Wai and Maggie Cheung Man-Yuk on the set of Wong Kar-Wai's 2046 when shooting resumes later this year. Speaking to reporters, Zhang confirmed the rumours. Zhang: "I'm looking forward to working with Maggie Cheung. My role is small but it won't matter because I will get a chance to watch Tony Leung and Maggie Cheung at work."
In even more Zhang Ziyi news, cosmetics concern Maybelline has hired Zhang to be the commercial spokesperson for its products in South East Asia. Related image (courtesy Apple Daily):

A party (centre) was held yesterday at TVB Studios as the comedy series FM 701 (aka BROADCAST LIVE) completed its final episode: Episode 102. On hand were the series' stars Vincent Kuk Tak-Chiu, Cheung Tat-Ming, Nicola Cheung Sun-Yu, Wyman Wong Wai-Man, Angela Tong Ying-Ying and Elle Choi Suet-Man (Siu Suet). The series has been beleagured by rumours that co-stars Nicola Cheung, Elle Choi and Shelia Chan do not get along. At the party, Nicola Cheung could not help shedding some tears as she suggested that the rumours were untrue. Cheung: "I'm really going to miss working with these guys. There were rumours that I didn't get along with Sheila and Siu Suet. But in the end we all became good friends."
Launched last fall during TVB's anniversary celebrations, FM 701 could not follow up on the success of its predecessor WAR OF THE GENDERS. It has been mired throughout its run in the mid-20s ratings points range. Related images (courtesy Oriental Daily News):

Buoyed by the success of his DUKE OF MT. DEER 2000, Wong Jing has been concentrating on television production lately as he has not one, not two but three television serials on the go. With his remake of CHOR LAU HEUNG already underway in Beijing, costuming for two more series -- STORM RIDERS and ZU WARRIORS OF THE MAGIC MOUNTAIN -- began yesterday in Taiwan and Shanghai respectively. STORM RIDERS stars Sonny Chiba, Wong Hei, Peter Ho Yun-Tung, Zhao Wenzhou (Chiu Man-Cheuk) and Taiwanese actress Ngan Wing. Lion Rock to remake 'Killer'
-from Hollywood Reporter
(SANNEY: Thanks to Richard and John for passing along the article.)
John Woo and Terence Chang's Lion Rock Prods. will produce a remake of Sam Peckinpah's 1975 thriller "Killer Elite" that helmer Terry Cunningham ("The Chaos Factor") is attached to direct from a script by John Jarrell ("Romeo Must Die"). Lion Rock, which has a first-look deal with "Killer's" original distributor, MGM, is developing the project under its discretionary fund. Lion Rock also has teamed with Phoenix Pictures on an untitled piracy project that Jarrell will pen under a deal worth mid-six figures. Although Lion Rock and Phoenix are tight-lipped about the latter project, it is known to be a thriller set in the South China Sea about a group of modern pirates.
