Tips for Finding a Place to Live

You can find housing through Websites, newspaper, and private advertisements.
There are three general types of living for a single student.

1. Rental House (Jachi)
A studio apartment. The most popular style of living for a single student. You are allowed to live in private but it takes a large amount of time to keep house.
  • Some guaranty money + monthly rent are general terms of payment.
  • Cost is various depending on location, area, and options.
  • General cost for a studio apartment in Shinchon is 50~70milliom won (rental cost)
  • Usually full-optioned with a desk, closet, bed (sometimes), refrigerator, gas berner, air-conditioner and washer.

2. Boarding (Hasuk)
If you don't have enough time for keeping households or money for renting house, you can choose 'boarding', in Korean 'Hasuk'. This is a kind of home stay not living with host but renting a room from the host. It is convenient because host provides meals and you do not need to pay extra cost like management expenses. You should concern your host's generosity before you decide to live. The personality of your host will affect a lot on your Hasuk life.
  • It costs 350,000~500,000 won for a single room and 300,000~350,000 for a double room per month on an average.
  • meals : breakfast & supper are provided (lunch is also provided for the occasion)
  • 1 bathroom per 3~5 rooms or 1 bathroom for 1 room(will be more expensive)
  • Options : desk, bed, sometimes cable & internet are included.

3. Dormitory
The most convenient & cheapest way of living for a single student. Especially, Ewha's dormitory, Hanwoori house is the ideal place to live. Its facilities are almost perfect and new (It was built only 5 years ago, in 1999). I lived in dorm when I was freshman and the life in the dorm was really great! Two difficulties of living in dorm are every day's roll call that is done by 11 o'clock every night and harmonious living with roommate. Excluding those, you can fully enjoy your dorm life in Hanwoori-house.
  • Only allowed for freshman & scholarship students
  • It costs 800,000~900,000 won for each semester.
  • 2 students a room
  • Room options : bed, closet, desk, chair, telephone, easy chair, toilet, air-conditioner, collection-closet, internet access
  • Facilities : cafeteria, pc room, laundry room, gym, study room, and health center.
  • Kitchenette: You can fix a quick meal here. The room has a refrigerator, microwave, and a toaster.
Lounge: In the lounge, you can watch TV and videotapes. Each floor has a lounge and the TVs have satellite connections.
