Headlines by Manfred Wong |

Time and Tide iConnect 12-12-2000 During filming,Tse received some valuable stage advice from Wu, who is known as " The King of Live Music " in Taiwan. " He saw one of my concerts on TV in Taiwan, and he said my guitar-playing was good, " Tse recalls. " I told him that I can't run around while I play like he can, so he told me to run during the sustaining tones, and to stand still when doing a quick riff. " Besides the transition from song to screen, the two share another trait - a mercurial relationship with the press. Wu says his reputation for shunning the media was because he wasn't interested in promoting his music. " When I was recording ,it was the concert that was important,I wanted reporters to come and see my concert and write how they felt about it, " says Wu, also clad in black, " And the media were not deep enought. They ask silly questions ; very superficial. " Wu has agreed to this interview because he is simply tired of saying no. " I do interviews now because otherwise it is too sun fu tiresome ...." He glances at his interpreter, wrestling occasionally to find the right words in English, " It was too hard always to refuse. " Playing Mandopop musicians in his two previous films, Wu has hardly been stretched as an actor. So Time and Tide ended up being a crash in the genre of Hong Kong action movies. He spent an intense month learning to shoot, kick, punch and perfect his somersaults for a series of stunts. A huge fan of Japanese pro- fessional wrestling, Wu occasionally climbs into the ring with his good friend, the prowrestler Muto Kenshi. The workouts keep him fit for the physical demands of movie-making. Wu may love Japanese professional wrestling, but he has no time for the razzmatazz of the American version .His English vocabulary may be limited, but he came up with a choice description of the World Wrestling Federation ( W W F ) : " It sucks ! " Apart from getting into sharpe, Wu also had to take on another tough assignment - learning to speak Spanish and Cantonese. He needed Spanish for his South American scenes and he would cram nightly and memorise his lines only to find they would be changed when he arrived on set the next day. As for Cantonese, Wu had to pick up the basics. " Hat, gloves, shoes, pants, " he says, rattling off the words in his Taiwanese-accented Cantonese. " I learned the language from the wardrobe department because those people were always talking to each other while they dressed me. " |
