In Harvest Moon: Back to Nature you can have many things upgraded on your farm. Here is the list of what can be upgraded, how much money and lumber, and a description of what it does.

Chicken Coop Money-$5,000
Wood-420
The Chicken Coop extension allows you to have 5 more chickens and also gives you another incubator to hatch double the eggs now. With this you are allowed to the the Mayonnaise Maker. Picture Unavailable

House Upgrade 1 Money-$4,700
Wood-370
This house upgrade adds a kitchen to your house so you can cook, a cabinet so you can store many types of things, and a couple of plants.

Barn Extension Money-$6,800
Wood-500
The Barn extension adds 10 more feeding stalls and allows you to have 20 animals, it also adds another fodder feeder and allows you to get the Cheese and Yarn Makers.

House Upgrade 2 Money-$10,000
Wood-750
This house upgade is the one needed to get married. It adds a separate bed for the wife and a fireplace. It also adds a dining room with a bigger table and makes the kitchen much bigger.

Hothouse Money-$30,000
Wood-580
The hothouse is a 7x7 area you can plant crops year round in. You must watch out though because it can be destroyed by a Winter snowstorm or a Summer hurricane. The best way to prevent this is to put your dog in the hothouse the night before a hurricane.<(Thanks to Gamergirl) Also it is best to plant Pineapples in there.
