Photography & Contests - teach/present the girls photography basics (parts of a camera, camera care, composition) as an artform - then have them take pictures using tips they just learned. - enter one of the monthly photo contests for fun. Hopefully all the girls parents would have a digital camera they could use. (Craigslist.com also has random amature photography opportunities) or give them assignment for example of taking photos of the shapes they find in nature, etc... |

Red Ribbon Week, October? - organize a "Drugs are Junk, Slam Dunk" competition during school's red ribbon week - provide the competion prize for the winner from extra(?) brownie troop funds if there are any available???. contest could be a game of horse playing basketball or shooting baskets and the winner of each round moves up until there is a final winner. or teacher's vs kids basketball game.. Brownies could organize, sponsor the winners prize and pass out waters during the event. |

Newport Beach 100 Year Birthday Pier to Pier Celebration - have a Brownies table at the Pier to Pier celebration showcasing posters (see below farther) of how bathing suits have changed over the years (goes along with the Orange County history lessons they will be learning towards the end of the year, as third graders) -- have the girls prepare by searching the public library for photographs and make copies to have blown up and glued to posters...? (not exactly sure what is going on during the Pier to Pier event, I think this idea is in line with what they are doing, but I could be wrong...) |

Newport Beach History - "Balboa Swing" - Read this link to Balboa Swing history to girls and have Ms. Jennifer (I can get her number, I am pretty sure she's reasonable - she teaches dance at Christ Church and has studio in costa mesa - i am sure she'll come to the scout house for one lesson for the girls) teach swing dance steps to the girls (goes along with OC history unit 3rd graders will study at end of year) |

Teacher Appreciation Week - have the girls make a banner to hang in the Newport El hallway saying "Brownie Troop 548 Appreciates Newport El Teachers" - with the girls artwork or teacher appreciation poems that are found online... etc. |

Dana Point Ocean Institure - Currently has black jelly fish on display - have heard awesome feedback from their exhibits. In addition they have great programs throughout the year, although the calendar for 2007 is not yet published - a Sea Bubble Science program is currently being held - looks great - just have to keep checking back for their spring programs |

last year saved flyers advertising this individual who will bring supplies for any of the following meetings below. The instructions qualify for badges apparently. Ms. Chant is professional artist and credientialed k-12 teacher. sessions run approx $7-$15 per girl depending on the class.
1) tie dye a beautiful silk scarf. $15 per girl . 10 girl min. may be great idea for teacher appreciation gift or mother's day or grandparents day or to donate to senior center or nursing home, etc.

We are neighbors & friends with Kingston's gramma, Suzy, who is extremely energetic, active and fit. She is knowledgable with something called the "Fan Dance" (Japanese????) and would be happy to teach the girls the dance for fun at the scout house. We could get the fans for them to color from Orientaltradingco.com -- As a volunteer project, they could meet another afternoon and do the dance for a nursing home locally. |
