LITTLE MAN ROBERT 7-28-98 TO 10-17-00 |
Robert was one day from being nine months old when he was diagnosed with Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis. He had been sick for just about everyday of his life with one thing or another. Finally after eight and a half months of taking him to one doctor after another, I found a doctor that agreed someting was not right with Robert. She put him in the hospital and ran a whole slew of tests and after only 24 hours sent him to Dallas to have some more tests done. She was pretty sure of what he had, but she wanted to make sure. He was diagnosed on April 27,1999 at Children's Medical Center of Dallas. The whole staff at that hospital deserve a big THANK YOU for all they have done for me and my family while Robert was there undergoing all the treatments and things associated with LCH. I am forever grateful to all of the people who had anything to do with Robert surviving as long as he did. He went through alot during his two short years, but was a fighter all the way. He is greatly missed by all those who loved him. I will always admire his strength and determination when the odds were strongly against him. |
For those who may not know what Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis or LCH as it is sometimes called, here is a short summary of the things that it can affect. LCH is a manifestation of histiocytes, which are a form of the white blood cell. The symptoms of this disease are fever, weight loss, fatigue, and can include skin rash, bone lesions, lymph node involvement, bone marrow, liver and spleen, lungs, gastrointestinal tract, endocrine glands, and the central nervous system. Robert had all but the central nervous system and the endocrine gland involvement. |
This was on Robert's First birthday. He had been diagnosed for three months at the time. Since he did not eat on his own he had surgery to place a tube in his tummy. He got all his nutrition from the tube feedings. He also had a port-a-cath for easier access when he needed IV medication or chemotherapy. |

Robert was a year and a half old here. He loved to be outside whenever he got the chance. This is right before his liver started to shut down. |
