        People first migrated to the Korean Peninsula from Siberia, Manchuria, and inner Asia several thousand years ago. Starting in the 14th century China had a strong influence on Korea, as did Japan from 1910 to 1945. Still, the Korean people have maintained a culture and language distinct from their Asian neighbors. After 1945, when the country was divided between north and south at the 38th parallel, South Korea changed from a country of mostly farmers living in rural villages to an urban industrialized nation. Seoul, the capital and heart of the country, is home to large corporations, banks, and government offices, as well as one-quarter of the country's 45 million people.
