He was a hobbit who has always lived in Bag End. His parents were Bungo Baggins and Belladonna Took.
Gandalf encouraged Bilbo to go on their quest with the dwarves all the way to wear Smaug, the dragon lived to destroy him in the Lonely Mountain.
When Bilbo was on the quest with the others, he was by himself, as he worked his way into a small cave. Later, he was playing a game with the creature Gollum, and foolishly enough, Bilbo told Gollum his name and where he lived. Gollum wanted to play riddles with Bilbo, and finally, Bilbo had won against the creature, so Gollum let him go. Though when he was in the cave, he found a small golden ring, and kept it for a long time.
Later, he adopted Frodo Baggins, his adopted heir. When Bilbo turned 111 years old, he left the Shire, and left the ring and his other belongings to Frodo and he traveled to Rivendell, the house of the elves, to finish his book.
