Merry had the Sharp-Ears and the other ponies ready for the hobbits to use on their journey. Later, in Bree, the ponies were let loose and they had fleed to Tom Bombadil's pony, Fatty Lumpkin, who had calmed them down and walked them back to Bree. Bob, who was the ostler at the Inn of the Prancing Pony, was to look after the ponies while they were in the stables in Bree.
