Analysis: Razvan Vladislav Dalibor was born in Bucharest, Romania to a family of five. After his birth, doctors discovered that his legs were crippled. Razvan's parents, Johann and Helena, were able to scrape together enough money to pay for a minor operation, but a year later the doctors said he would need another, more complex, more expensive, operation. Unfortunately, the Dalibors were too poor to afford the treatment, so their only option was to have little Razvan fitted with leg braces to force the bones to grow as straight as possible and a pair of crutches so he could walk. Razvan proved that he would not allow his disability to interfere with his chances of being as normal a child as possible. Whenever he was teased about his inability to participate in races or other sports, Razvan would simply challenge his antagonist to a game of chess or some other test of mental skill. Another favorite pastime of Razvan's was to visit his many cousins. During one of these many occasions he went with some of his cousins into the woods to play hide-and-seek. The game was going well when the eldest, Leonid, decided it would be fun to throw rocks at a wolf that had been seen wandering about in that portion of the woods for several months. A rock hit the wolf in the side, and Razvan yelled for his cousins to leave the wolf alone.
The wolf charged at the boys, who ran for their very lives. Razvan lost his grip on his crutches and fell down into a ditch. The wolf began attacking Razvan as he tried to climb up the embankment. A shot rang out through the air, striking the enormous wolf in the heart, and Razvan's grandfather charged through the clearing holding a rife. The other boys came forward to explain themselves when their grandfather hushed them. A moan came from the ditch. Not the cry of an injured child, but the groaning of a man in mortal agony. Suddenly, a pair of hands shoved Razvan's unconscious form up onto the ledge of the ditch and a shabby young man dragged himself out. The youth was clearly dying and in hysterics, begging the old man in Romanian to forgive him for hurting Razvan. Then the young man whispered faintly, "I am free of the curse of the werewolf.......", and died.
Razvan's family remained inconsolable as the horror of the child's condition manifested itself in full force the following night in the local hospital. A quick-thinking nurse gave Razvan a large dose of tranquilizers, thereby preventing the neophyte werewolf from attacking any other patients. Thus began the ordeal which would take the Dalibor family halfway across the world to California, where a school would accept Razvan wholeheartedly and without persecution. Here, at Redwood Academy, he discovered he was not alone in his lycanthropic condition. The professors and staff had many other werewolves under their guidance and a few of those students went on to become professors themselves.
