Chapter 10 JC and Kristin walked into JC's apartment both involuntarily letting out a sigh. JC looked at Kristin as she plopped herself down on the couch. "I guess you're staying here tonight," JC said, no longer trying to hide his contempt for her. "Well, considering I'm still in your body…" "I'm going to bed," he headed toward the bedroom but stopped before leaving the living room. "I guess it's true what they say, be careful what you wish for." Kristin's eyes widened with recognition, as she heard JC mention wishing. She quickly ran after him bursting into his bedroom. JC stood there, shirtless, preparing to put on Kristin's pajamas. He quickly covered himself. "Kristin what are you doing bursting into my room?" "JC, don't be stupid. You're in my body." JC looked down, remember that it was Kristin's body and let the shirt drop from it position covering her chest. "Oh, right. Still why are you bursting into my room. What if I wasn't in your body, what if I was in mine and you had walked in on me?" "JC, if you were in your body, then that would mean I would be in my body and I wouldn't be here." JC glared into his eyes. "What do you want?" "What was it you said about wishing just before you left the room?" "What? Be careful what you wish for?" "Yeah, what did you mean by that?" "Well, the night before we switched, I wished that you would know what it's like to be me." JC paused a moment, "What do you care what I said? You've never thought twice about anything that I've said." "JC, I made that same wish." "So?" "So?! JC, don't you get it? You and I must have wished the same thing at the same time, so it came true." "Great, we both wanted the other person to know what it was like to be us. We got out wish, woopdeedo. Feel free to leave at any time." "JC, try to think for a second. I know it'll be hard for you but just try. If you and I wished at the same time to switch, what if we wished at the same time to switch back? It might just be the way to switch back." "It's a long shot but we could try." The two closed their eyes, silently wishing, hoping when they opened their eyes again, their wish would come true. They waited a few moments and then slowly each other them opened their eyes. Kristin found that she was still looking into her own eyes, instead of that of JC's. A small sigh came from her mouth. "It didn't work." JC looked over his own face and could tell that Kristin was disappointed that it didn't work. Kristin saw that JC hadn't said anything and that he was continuing to look at her. Slowly he began to move closer to her, closing the distance between them. "JC, what are you…?" Before she could finish, JC had completely closed the gap, and had begun slowly massaging his lips with hers. Kristin found herself unable to pull away, as she enjoyed the feeling of their lips together. JC slowly pulled back, taking in a quick breath. Kristin slowly opened her eyes and found herself looking into JC's eyes instead of her own. "Oh my God," Kristin said, a smile spreading over her face. She began running her hands over herself, checking to make sure everything was back to normal. JC looked down to see his much larger hands in front of him. "I…I guess we're back," he said sighing. "JC, why do you look like your aunt just died. We're back in our own bodies. We can live our own lives now." "Now you'll go back to ignoring me, only talking to me when you have something mean to say to me. Thanks but I kinda like the way it was. You were halfway decent to me. Occasionally treating me like a person and not just a punching bag. That was better than nothing." "JC…" "Kristin, I've learned one thing during this time." "JC, I don't think…" "I love you," JC interrupted. "And I want to be with you. I felt the way your body reacted when my hand brushed against your skin, when I kissed you. I know you feel the same way. Now all you have to do is realize it yourself." "JC, I can't." "Why not? What are you afraid of?" "I'm afraid of what we would be." Kristin could tell that JC didn't understand what she meant. Truth be told, she wasn't sure what she meant herself. "JC, I know you and I would be something…something that I'm not ready for. I have things that I have to do in my life before…" "Kristin, are you listening to yourself? You know you feel the same way I do. You know that you and I belong together. Some people look their whole life and don't find what we have. And you're going to pass this up." "I can't be with you JC." "Why not? Give me one good reason that you can't." Kristin desperately tried to think of something to say to answer his questions, but she knew there was no good reason. "I have to go." "No, Kristin, you can't just leave." "JC, I have to. Don't you understand, I just can't be with you." Before JC could argue, Kristin picked up her shirt from JC's floor. Kristin looked into JC's hurt eyes once again. "I'm sorry," she whispered. With that, Kristin left his room. JC slowly sat down on his bed, raking his fingers through his hair, something he wasn't used to doing to short hair. He replayed the events of the last few minutes in mind over and over, trying to figure out what went wrong. After coming up with nothing, he fell back, lying down on the bed, his tired eyes closing slowly. |
