Jelly Beans

For this project we estimated what color we thought would show up most often in the bag of jelly beans. Five children predicted correctly with the color pink. Then, we split each bag in half and each group sorted and counted the jelly beans. Next, we practiced our double-digit addition skills by adding the amounts from the two groups. Then, we counted how many jelly beans were in each bag. We were surprised to learn that bag one held 292 jelly beans and bag two contained 274. We found out the difference between the two bags was 18 candies. Then we looked at the serving sizes and servings per container on the back of the bag and found out the bag should hold about 275 jelly beans.
Here are two pie graphs showing how many of each flavor of jelly bean were in each bag of Smucker's Jelly Beans.
