Apple Week
We had a fun and very busy week learning with the help of apples.
Here are some pictures of our activities.
The first thing we did on Wednesday morning was to start making our applesauce. First everyone put their apples in the crock pot. Then we added one cup of sugar and a tablespoon of cinnamon. The sauce cooked slowly all day. We had the best smelling room in the school! Once the sauce was cooking we learned a song about Johnny Appleseed.
While the sauce was cooking we got busy with our other apple. First, we greeted each other by passing an apple and saying "Happy Apple Day!" Then we played an apple relay game where we did a pattern of passing an apple over our heads and under our legs. That game produced lots of laughs. Then we sorted apples and made apple patterns. Rest of the class had to try and guess the sorting rule and the pattern.
After the math activities we brainstormed all the words we could think of that described apples. Then we wrote apple poems. (See our poems below.) For reading we read Johnny Appleseed. Some children read alone, some with a partner and some with me. Finally, at the end of the day we got to eat the applesauce. Most of the children found it delicious!
The next day apple activities continued. First we graphed our favorite way to eat apples. Then we wrote two sentences about the graph in our math journals. Later, we estimated and weighed one medium sized apple. Then we estimated and weighed all of our apples.  The children were introduced to ounces and pounds. For reading we read Johnny Appleseed together and then listened to another version of it. We ate our apples for snack.  The following day we listened to some more apple stories and completed a venn diagram comparing and contrasting the the Johnny Appleseed story with read with a video of Johnny Appleseed. On Friday we did reader's theater activity with the story of Johnny Appleseed.
