A Weekend in the Alps | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
July 11 -14, 2003 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The lure of the Alps was irrepressible, so we finally took a weekend road trip. After scrambling to get the dogs into the kennel (in Swiss hotels dogs count as people, so you can't put six living beings in a room together - it got far too complicated!), we drove three hours and spent the night in France. Then, Saturday morning, we drove from France, through Germany, through Switzerland and arrived in Liechtenstein. Let's just say that Liechtenstein didn't have a lot of photo opportunities. We had lunch there, got our passports stamped and purchased some postage stamps. Then we were off to Austria. Once in Austria Kevin used his trusty method of finding a good place to hike - drive uphill!

We took a nice hike in the Austrian Alps and found lots of wild strawberries. It was very beautiful. We found a treehouse to climb up and see the view. After our hike we decided to head back to Switzerland. We had a beautiful drive through another section of the Alps and saw more beautiful scenery than you can imagine! One of the biggest surprises of our trip was how little border control there was - they hardly glanced at our passports! |

On Sunday we drove to Adelboden, Switzerland to visit Our Chalet, an international center for Girl Scouts and Girl Guides. I have heard about Our Chalet all my life and it was wonderful to get to see it and take a tour. It actually has an interesting history.

From Our Chalet we drove to Kandersteg, which is in the next valley. Kandersteg is where there is an international camp for European Scouts. Most European Scout organizations are now co-ed, but they are affiliated with the American Boy Scouts. It was mostly boys at the camp, but there were also many girls and families.

Can you sing "The Hills are Alive, with the Sound of Music"?
Kandersteg is a very cute town. In many ways this region is similar to the Colorado Rockies, but in many ways it is also different. It wasn't as overdeveloped, for instance. But it didn't smell as good as the Rockies. Anyhow, we had dinner at the restaurant behind Ellen in the picture above on the right. After dinner we learned that this restaurant has hosted Prince Charles, Kofi Anan, and the King of Belgium! We had the classic Swiss fondue and fried potatoes. We loved Switzerland - it was well worth the long drive!
