Festival Cruise Lines is a European company. Fewer than 5% of its passengers are Americans, most of the other passengers on this cruise were Italians, with Austrians coming in a distant second. Below are photos of the cruise ship, European Vision, so that you can have a sense of what the ship was like. (The photo of the ship is against the backdrop of Santorini, which we visited on Day 4 of the cruise.)

On Monday morning we awoke to find ourselves in Dubrovnik, Croatia. We had to travel by "tender" (little boat) from the ship to the port at Dubrovnik. This is a walled city, which suffered during the Serbo-Croatian War of the 1990s. It has recovered well.

Upon arriving in the city, we headed straight for the wall, which you can walk along with views of the city and of the surrounding area. Unfortunately, it was so brutally hot that we lasted less than 30 minutes before we had to find some shade. We ended our walk on the wall at the Maritime Museum, where we found the anchor below and several cannons. Opting not to visit the museum, we walked down off the wall and found a lovely cafe on the street where we had cold drinks and cooled off in the shade.

The Croats speak Croatian, but many also speak German and/or English. Their currency is currently the Kuna, but they are happy to take Euros and US dollars.

We stopped in the local church and walked the clean, paved streets. There is lots of shopping here, but mostly western stores and brands. Will was disappointed that it was difficult to find any examples of local crafts. Dubrovnik has very little green space and is paved with precisely cut stone.

Dubrovnik would be a fun place to go for a few days, with a visit to the beach added. Unfortunately, we were only able to be in the city for a couple of hours, but we made the most of it and it was so hot that we were glad to head back to the ship.
