Cruising the Mediterranean

Our next stop was Rhodes. Thursday we were back to the routine of arriving at the port first thing in the morning. We had decided that we would be adventurous at Rhodes and find a beach on our own to do some more snorkeling. After failing in trying to get a cab, a scooter and a bus in the extreme heat, we finally cried "Uncle" and just roamed around the old city of Rhodes. Behind Will and Ellen you can see the wall of the city. This is an awesome medieval walled city.

One of our first stops was this 600-year-old fountain (right). Then we strolled until we found the archaeological museum at the Knights' Hospital (below). Much to our surprise, Will and Ellen wanted to see the museum, so we went on in.

Despite our regrets that we never made it to a beach, had we not wandered Rhodes City, we would not have seen such a spectacular display of ancient and medieval Greek art and artifacts. We saw many ancient Greek ceramics which had been found on the island, such as the one on the left with the wild boar. The mosaic floors are original and the catapult balls were piled in the courtyard. We saw lot of sculptures of Greek Gods and Goddesses and crests of the Knights of St. John.

Below is the Knights' Street lined by the inns where the knights of each nationality lived. Knights from across Europe came to Rhodes in 1309 and built a citadel on the ruins of a city that had been started there in 408 BC (for those who have read The Davinci Code, yes, this was an interesting place to be.)

Rhodes is a very beautiful and unique island. It also had great shopping (hmm, I'm seeing a link between cruise ports and shopping). Ellen got this great Greek hat in Rhodes, but the best part was when a Greek woman showed Ellen how girls wear the hat in Greece.

The show on Thursday night was the best! The dancing was great and then they ended the show with a rousing chorus of "We are the World" with flags from the many countries represented by the staff and guests on the ship.
