Our trip to Germany - part 3

On Tuesday, after going to Heilbronn, we decided to check out the wildlife park at Tripsdrill. Will and Ellen just love animals and nature, and this place fit the bill. We got to see the staff feed the wolves, grizzly bears and lynx. There was a fantastic playground where we had a picnic and then we went for a hike in search of wild boar. While hiking through the park we found that we were able to buy animal food to feed to the deer, mountain goats, wild horses and yaks (see Will feeding the yak below.) Will really wanted to see the wild boar and we finally found them. They had lots of babies - very cute, for pigs.

On Tuesday evening we drove around in search of food. Small town Germany can be a hard place to find dinner ("Where's the Pizza Hut?"). We finally found ourselves in a great little German restaurant in Neckarwestheim where we had classic German food.

On Wednesday morning we headed for the Black Forest. After checking into our hotel in Rust, we went for a drive to Triberg (home of cuckoo clocks.) Guess what! We drove for a couple of hours in the hills of the Black Forest and got good and lost! But it's a beautiful place to get lost and we found some castle ruins to explore. The Black Forest is just as you'd imagine.
At the castle ruins, Ellen looked for critters in the clouds.
So, why Rust? Well, Rust is where Europapark is. Europapark is very similar to Disneyland, but half the cost and all in German and French. We spent ALL DAY Thursday at Europapark and didn't run into any other English-speaking visitors - a first during our travels in Europe. So, you could say that this was authentic German family fun. I'm sure the mascot, Euromaus, pictured below, is just a coincidence. Europapark is divided into areas dedicated to different European countries. We spent a lot of time in Spain and Greece (it's sunnier there.) We had a fantastic time at Europapark and were completely exhausted at the end of the day.

Friday was our day to head home, but we were determined to find Triberg! Armed with two maps of the Black Forest purchased at a gas station, we took a new route to Triberg and actually got there without driving in circles! The highest waterfall in Germany is located in Triberg. We had a nice hike and then hit the cuckoo clock store! Bought the perfect cuckoo clock, and Ellen got a little "Heidi Haus" clock for her room. The perfect ending to a great German vacation. |

Walking in the Black Forest. See all the pine pollen in the air? Believe us, it's there. Kevin and Laura suffered for days afterwards. Achoo! Gesundheit!
