Hamburg
Home
Finally, we were able to spend a weekend in Hamburg with our friends who live there. Norbert works with Kevin. In May 2002 he and his family (Anna and children Lisa and JanNicolas) moved to Colorado for a temporary assignment. They moved into our neighborhood and we got to know each other over barbecues and at the pool. Anna, her mom and the kids even spent Thanksgiving with us since Kevin and Norbert were in Europe for the American holiday. Anyhow, shortly after that we moved to Belgium, and then they moved back to Hamburg in May.
Friday evening Will, Ellen and Laura flew to Hamburg and met Kevin and Norbert, who were flying there from Milan. On Saturday we started the day going to a market in their neighborhood. This was the best European market we have been to. Then we all went to downtown Hamburg to take a boat tour of the harbour. On the left above you can see that Hamburg is a canal city. Hamburg's harbor is one of the largest and busiest in the world and we got to see lots of cargo ships up close.
To the left you can see Will and Ellen with one of the many "water carrier" statues found in Hamburg. On the right is one of the locks that allows boats to navigate from one river to another. Hamburg's downtown was bustling and very beautiful. We had lunch downtown at a restaurant next to the water.
After a driving tour around Hamburg, we stopped at a small fair in the local neighborhood. The kids had a great time on the rides and we tried some of the German carnival food. Greasy and sweet, just like in the states! Below Ellen and Lisa launch their attack on the bumper cars, which Will especially enjoyed!
On Sunday we relaxed and went to the beach which is along the river in Hamburg. The kids had a great time playing in the sand. Then we had sausages and ice cream.

Anna and Norbert hired a babysitter for the evening and we got to go out for dinner! It was fantastic to get to enjoy a wonderful meal at a restaurant that was on the river. And I mean ON the river. It was so wonderful to get to spend time with our friends. And the whole weekend was a great way to get comfortable with the idea of moving to Germany.
