More of Our Trip to London
July 24 - 28, 2003
Our second goal for this trip to London was to see the British Museum. We especially wanted to see the Elgin marbles and other Greek works of art because we will be going to Greece in August. I figure it saves us having to see the same kind of stuff in sweltering temperatures! The British Museum is incredible. Beautifully laid out, great descriptions of each piece and an unbelievable collection. We also saw the Rosetta Stone and other Egyptian artifacts. And we saw a special exhibit of the Wellcome collection of pieces related to the human body (artificial limbs, shrunken heads, etc.) Below Ellen stands in front of the piece that is on the postcard she chose for our museum "treasure hunt". and Kevin has an identity crisis (photo by Ellen!)
From the British Museum we dashed to Kensington Gardens to meet Randy, Lisa, Jesse and Ethan for high tea! Other than exceptionally bad service, it was wonderful.
After a quick stop at Princess Diana's playground (again!) we headed back to the British Museum neighborhood to meet our friends from Colorado, Paula and Dave, who were in London for a few days. We got to have a nice Italian dinner with them. It is so rejuvenating for us to get to see friends from back home and catch up a little.
On Monday, Kevin had to go back to work, but the rest of us had a few hours before our train back to Belgium. We toured the Cabinet War Rooms, which are underground offices and bedrooms where Winston Churchill and his advisors led the war effort during World War II. It was fascinating. It is especially well-done because it was all left in the original condition when the war ended. They just locked the doors and walked away. Now it's a wonderful exhibit.
Our friends had an earlier train than Will, Ellen and I, so they left after a picnic lunch along the Thames. The kids and I decided to take a ride on the London Eye. This is the world's largest observation wheel. It is quite impressive and hangs out over the Thames. You ride with about 20 people in a bubble room. It takes about 40 minutes to make the full circle. It was a fun thing to do - unique to London.

We had 40 minutes after the Eye, so we dashed into an exhibit of art by Dali. Again, interesting and sometimes disturbing. I think Will likes Modern Art about as much as I do and we've had enough for July!
Randy, Lisa, Jesse and Ethan left very early the next morning. We are so grateful that they were able to come visit us. It was a wonderful, special time!
