Day Three of the Mother Daughter Trip to Paris
June 29 - July 1, 2003
The morning of our last day in Paris, we headed for the Champs Elysees to find some breakfast. First we visited the Place de la Concorde (where royals met their doom during the Revolution). The Egyptian obelisk seen on the right marks the spot. The red, white and blue awnings you can see behind us were covering bleachers being set up for the Tour de France.

Before we could even get to breakfast, we found ourselves in the Gap buying clothes for Ellen! It was a surprising thrill to get to find American clothes at reasonable prices and in American sizes - we just couldn't resist! Anyhow, we finally had brunch and headed for the Rodin museum. A storm was brewing, so it made the walk a little more exciting.
On the way to the Rodin museum we passed the National Assembly. Political geek that I am, I just had to take a photo of the seat of the French government!
Actually, we decided not to go into the Rodin museum, and just wandered the gardens, which include many of his sculptures. Rodin is probably best known for sculpting the Thinker (seen to the right), which was actually designed as part of the Gates of Hell (from Dante's Inferno, shown below on the left).
We also kept coming across this new, live work of art, called "The Reader." Harry Potter number 5 had just been released, and Bridget was down to the last few pages, so she enjoyed reading her book in the gardens (shown on the right).
From Rodin's gardens we headed for Invalides and Napoleon's Tomb. Because we had a train to catch, we ran through the Military museum to see Napoleon's Tomb. There was an exhibit of items from Napoleon and Russian Czar Alexander at the tomb, so we enjoyed seeing the things from their lives and from the period when Napoleon hosted Alexander in Paris. Ellen has become quite interested in Napoleon thanks to the video series Grandma and Grandpa gave us, and thanks to the proximity of Napoleon sites in Belgium and France! He just seems to be everywhere!

We had a wonderful time in Paris and it was especially fun to spend time together, one-on-one. In the meantime, Will and Kevin were enjoying Scout camp in England.
