SHORT BALL FOREHAND APPROACH – RUN

Last week we covered the low, short ball approach shot with a “hop swing”. The week before we learned about the high, short ball attack shot with a “jump swing”. This week I will cover the third and last short ball forehand which I call a “run through”.
This last short forehand is a really low ball that causes you to run and hit the ball on the dead run. Without stopping try running after the ball like a sprinter by pumping the arms. Prepare to hit the ball right before you reach the ball by twisting the upper body. Keep your lower body moving forward with the legs still running without any twisting. Make sure you run to the ball at a speed which allows you to move through the swing without hesitation.
Running through the shot with your legs moving one direction while your upper body turns and swings with a forehand topspin will do several things.
First, your forward momentum will carry you closer to the net on the approach. Second, your balance will much greater without starting and stopping while running. This in turn will keep your head still so both eyes get a good look at the ball. Thirdly, your momentum will also create additional pace and power as your body moves through the stroke.
