Feeding page Continued |
-continued- This can be an advantage but can fet you bitten if you aren't watching. Caution should be taken as some individuals WILL react to the venom of the hognose snakes-but most people will not |
On the other hand I have some photos of a hognose snake bite that I will put on the feeding photo page, for Your information only |

Eventually the snakes will begin to take food items individually, meaning you will only have to offer one type of food item,-the above recipe ensures that the snakes will be used to the tastes of al the different food items and not refuse them due to taste alone. The first offering of unscented pink mice is better offered LIVE, the snakes react to the movement and then take the food and since they know the taste already they rarely refuse it. After they have taken Unscented LIVE pinks, move to frozen pinks-you may still have to hand (forceps) offer the pink to some of the snakes. Some young snakes will take their time to grab the food and others will attack it quickly-each snake has it's own personality when feeding. So watchout for the "food stealers"-those snakes are the ones that will go after anything that another snake is eating. I have found that if I remove a snake that has food from the cage-it works nicely-hognose rarely drop food once they have hold of it-so don't worry about picking one up that is eating. You can give the snake peace and quiet till if finishes swallowing it's food. Then when it's done you can place it back in with the rest. Remember never leave even 2 hognose alone together with food in the cage. This can result in them eating each other by mistake or other injuries. Other feeding tricks: 1. Here's new one I came upon by accident; It seems that baby hognose and some adults-Eastern and Western like the taste and smell of fish fillets. I have been feeding them trout as part of their regular-varied diet. I also found that scenting other food itmes-such as pink mice with fish smell works veru well too. 2. Talking a frozen toad and tossingit the blender (YUK) and freezing the resulting slurry-then thawing out some and smearingit on a mouse or dipping the mouse in the slurry. 3. Rubbing a mouse on a frozen toad or frog. 4. Rubbing a mouse on the inside of a cut open frozen frog or toad. there are a whole lot of ideas-I have presented the ones that have worked for me best. If you have any questions about it these-please feel free to contact me. One question I have already gotten is: What if I can't baby toads and frogs?" In that case you can chop the frozen amphibians into smaller pieces after freezing. Then thaw only what you thinkyou will need. The above recipe can be used on stubborn Westerns as well-I have used it for that species and it works fine. For stubborn Madagascar Hognose-you can replace the native species with Green Treefrogs-they have proven to be safe to use on this Madagascar Hognose-they can be purchased in pet shops or caught if they are native to where you live. |
