Dusty Hognose (Heterodon nasicus gloydi) Note: Recent Studies are showing that this subspecies is not a subspecies but a color varient of the Plains Hognose (Heterdon nasicus nasicus). I'm leaving this page here-until it becomes "official" as so not confuse anyone. |
Dusty Hognose aka Dusky--(Heterodon n. gloydi) is a sub-species of Western Hognose Length: 18 to 24 inches Diet: Toads, frogs, lizard eggs, lizards, and small rodents. Like all Westerns have been known to take other food items such as fish and carrion. Range: Texas, Extreme SE New Mexico, Oklahoma. This ssp. will intergrade with the Plains hognose where the ranges cross over. This ssp. is difficult to distinguish from the Plains sub-species. Dustys have a dark blotch count of 32 or less in females and 37 or less in males. The blotches should be count from head to cloaca-directly above the cloaca-not down the tail. Azygous scale count-9 or more (these are the scales directly behind the rostral) The Dusky is easily bred in captivity and fairly commonly offered for sale. Generally easy to maintain in captivity as they readily accept small rodents as food. |
