The new Merry Widow in Vilnius is a magnificent show for the eyes. Best off all: The ballet and the grizettes. Second: the Costumes by Eldor Renter. Third: Inesa Linaburgyte singing the Vilja Song. by Henning Hoholt & Tomas Bagackas Foto: Mikhail Rashkovsky Monika Wisler, is responsible for the regi and choreographie, as she also was some years ago, when she staged Wienerblood at The Vilnius Opera, also a great success for the company. Monika Wiesler has this seldome capacity, to make a flowing operetta, where you just enjoy what you are watching and listening to. This specially capacity does that, for us, the ballet and the grizettes was the best. The singers At the New Years evening galla premiere, Inesa Linaburgyte was Hanna Glavary, and her performance of the Vilja Song was the best I have heard for many years, beautiful, soft, and with a woderful voice controle. However mrs Linaburgyte is very convincing in the titelrole, but in other parts of the operetta, she is screaming too laut and not allways any beautifully. F.ex. When the wonderful singing and acting Audrius Rubezius as Camille de Rossillon is having his aria number one: Come to the Little Pavillon, and the following up ensemble after that he have come out of the pavillon together with Hanna Glavari. In this he is definately, the main voice in the ensemble, and in deed did it well, - we could feel a line back to Noreikas sound, thought, it is not yet so wonderful. In the latest part of the ensemble mrs. Linaburgyte is coming in with her screaming voice, so we could not any longer hear mr. Rubezius. That was not any good to listen to The conductor should have heard that, and hold her down, but didnt. That was a pitty. Valencienne, Regina Slinskaite, is wonderfully singing and dancing. Laimonas Pautienius as Count Danilo is good, has a beautiful voice, but was lacking power abit, so we could not always hear him, and at least not together with mrs. Linaburgyte. Vytautas Bakula was a safe choice as Baron Zeta. However in the latest act, he is not so visible any longer, as the scenographer has desided, to let that act be without decoration on the suits, so he is looking like the others in black and white, - but this is only a detail. Many smaller roles deserves to be mentioned, but ot to be too long we shall point out the Grizettes, they were great. We also enjoyed the two balletsoloists Inga Cibulskyte and Igoris Zaripovas, the last with an excellent spagat. Orchestra and conductor The orchestra sounded like we like it, with orchestral elegant details, harps, mandolino? that we later found out was from a little pianoinstrument, well and discretely used, and others. Excellent brass sounds. It was all well conducted by Jonas Aleksa, who, as usual when he is entering the podium, seams like he is not is interested in, if the audience is applauding or not. Therefore the start is a little bit like: Is it now it is going to start or not? It would be a good idea to response to applause, when the conductor is coming in, then it is like the whole thing is going to start, also for the audience. Henning Hoholt, hoeholthus@c2i.net |
