Holland-Hayward Family

Hayward family photos from England

The reverse says: "With Ida's love. Do you know these people?" The response: "Grandpa Hayward (with Hal), Aunt Ida, Uncle Rae. Mother's old home (at) Peasenhall." Probably taken around 1900.

The Hayward sisters, names uncertain

Florence Smith, nee Hayward, with one of her two older granddaughters - either Jean Agatha Smith or Sylvia May Smith.

This Daguerreotype photo was given to Pam Burr by her grandmother Ida Allen (nee Holland). Ida said that it shows the brother and sisters of Gertrude Hayward (Holland). She thought they were Florence, Constance, Agatha and Charlie, however, not all those names agree with the known names, unless some of them preferred to use their second names. Apparently none of these three women pictured ever married and all were governesses - so that excludes Florence (who married) from the list. The one seated on the bench evidently fell down some stairs and broke her neck.

Samuel and Naomi Hayward married on 27 November 1856. Members of their family were:

Agatha M. Hayward, born about 1858 at Sibton. Referred to presumably as "A. Hayward" in Constance's Death Notice (see below) in 1935, indicating she never married.

Gertrude Ruth Hayward, born 27 December 1859, theoretically at Peasenhall, but the 1861 Census says she was born in nearby Sibton. The Hayward family were in Peasenhall by 1861. She emigrated to New Zealand in 1883 and married Londoner George Potticary Holland the following year and produced four children.

Emily I. Hayward, born about 1863 at Peasenhall. Perhaps she was known as 'Ida', in which case perhaps her husband was named 'Rae' and her son named 'Hal', of Peasenhall (see photo at top)?

Florence E. Hayward, born about 1864 in Peasenhall. She married Wesley Smith in 1892 and produced one child.

Maria J. C. Hayward, born about 1867 at Dieppe, France. Perhaps she was known as 'Constance', in which case she died unmarried on 26 January 1935 at 16 Willoughby Road, Kingston, England.

Frederick S. J. Hayward, born about 1869 at Dieppe, France

Herbert W. Hayward, born late 1870 or early 1871 at Dieppe, France. He was aged seven months and living with his grandparents in Peasenhall at the time of the 1871 Census.
