Holland-Hayward Family

George & Gertrude Holland's Family Photos

Gertrude and George Holland, with George junior (son of the deceased Emily Annie). Due to George junior's age (about three years) , it can be assumed that this photo was taken shortly after the couple married on 6 December 1884. It can also be assumed that, like her daughter Ida, Gertrude was not very tall.

The first photo taken of 21 Halswell Street, Wanganui, after the family moved there in about 1896. They had bought the house from a Mr Rumbolt and (much) later sold it to the Cruickshanks. From left the family are, Alexander, Gertrude, George, Herbert Henry (on tricycle), George junior, Violet, Annie, Ida Constance (with dolls pram). George had made both the pram and tricycle. Alex's daughter, Mrs Moore of Bulls, later donated the tricycle to Wanganui Museum. The brass 'Peasenhall' sign is yet to appear on the front of the house. The differing colours of the verandah roof as shown here was very popular at that time.

From left, Harry, Gertrude, Ida and George outside 21 Halswell St., Wanganui, which now has its 'Peasenhall' sign on the front. The photo was probably taken around the start of World War II.

21 Halswell St., Wanganui, probably on the day of the couple's Golden Wedding Anniversary in December 1934. Note the major change to the appearance of the front verandah. Based on photos of the Allen family children (Ida's children) this bungalow-isation of the front of the house appears to have occurred about 1925. From left, the people in the photo are: Ed Chesswas, Alan Chesswas, Vi Chesswas (nee Violet Holland), Edie Holland (standing), Merle Holland, Adrienne Allen (sitting at front), Gertrude holding baby Joan Chesswas, Alex Holland, Ngaire Holland (sitting at front), unknown woman standing behind Alex, Ralph Allen, Ida Allen (nee Holland), George, Warwick Allen (child sitting at front), Viv Allen (in front of her parents), Graham Holland, Nell Holland, Peggy Chesswas, Pam Holland and her twin Peter (being held), Neville Allen (child standing in front), Harry Holland (holding child).

21 Halswell Street, Wanganui, in early 1994. It is long since out of family ownership. The house's architectural transition from a fairly modest bay villa (befitting a railway manual worker) to a form of bungalow (specifically its verandah and frontage) largely stripped of its characteristic 1890s-style fancywork, is an interesting example of the changing styles of New Zealand houses - not to mention their gardens also.
