Stan and Ollie's Death - October 1997

Stan and Ollie were the original comedy double act of Hollyoaks. They were the best of friends and they both had a vibrant, upbeat spirit towards life, never letting anything or anyone get them down. However Stan's life was turned upside down when he discovered that he had got Cindy Cunningham pregnant on her 16^th birthday. Stan went round to Cindy's house desperate to prove that he would stand by her, but a deeply upset Cindy told Stan that she hated him and wanted nothing to do with him. Stan was devastated and headed off to the Dog where he began drinking heavily. Ollie soon came along to try and calm Stan down but Stan was beyond help and reason and went to his car with Ollie following. Lucy urged Kurt, Tony and Bazz to follow Stan's car, as she was worried for Ollie's safety. As Stan drove around recklessly Ollie pleaded with him to stop but he refused, taking his anger out on the car. Suddenly they came across a lorry and Stan had no time to brake. Their car hurtled straight into the lorry and Stan and Ollie were both seriously injured. The following week the Bensons reached the decision to switch off Ollie's life support machine and he died. Stan also died in hospital. After Ollie's death the Benson family fell apart with Lucy turning to drugs and Mr and Mrs Benson experiencing marriage problems. They did manage to piece their lives back together eventually but they had more grief when their eldest son Kurt died in a jet ski accident.
