HONEYCRACK - Lyrics
Samantha Pope

Written by Willie. (Dowling) Warner Chappell Music Ltd.

Samantha Pope has gone away - (I don't know why she's leaving) It only happened yesterday - (A rumour to believe in) She used to meet the ice-cream man - (He's over twice her age) Late after school inside his van - (And all the children say) She'd do it all for 99's - (I wonder if its true) Parked on the double yellow lines And when her monthly friend was late to arrive She figured she was better dead than alive She went for overdose, 'til she was comatose Goodbye to innocence Goodbye Samantha Pope I used to think it so unfair - (I'd dream of what she did) What I would give to be with her - (Like all the older kids) They could have told her more in class - (Instead of mystery) They just used threats and photographs - (Dressed as biology) She seemed untouchable and wild - (Don't think I understood) That she was no more than a child And now my recollection dishes the blame They made her guilty and they scarred her with shame Responsibility, is in authority Goodbye to innocence Goodbye Samantha Pope And then her old man, a sergeant major Put Mr. Whippy in a bed with a hammer in his head They made a picture, like a scripture Thou shalt not kill but you pushed me so I will And all mommy could do Was send the children to the Sunday school Saying "Never let it happen to you" There was a whisper, in circulation That they were moving her around to the other side of town To a new life, in a girls school Where they would teach her shame with a bible and a cane And nobody would say If we would ever get to see her again And I'm curious as I was then No one ever said I took a walk through Eldon square - (Something lead me to) Perhaps I thought I'd see her there - (Just like I used to do) I'll never know quite what she felt - (I'm only guessing now) If only someone could have helped - (Although I don't know how) I wonder if she made it through - (And if she's still around) For all the shit they put her through So goodbye to innocence Goodbye Samantha Pope (Goodbye to innocence) Goodbye Samantha Pope (Goodbye to innocence) Goodbye Samantha Pope Samantha Pope (Goodbye) Samantha Pope (Goodbye) Samantha Pope (Goodbye) I hope this becomes a favourite one live because I really love this song. It is based on a real situation from when I was at school. A girl got pregnant by the ice cream vendor and we never saw her again. Whenever I go back to Newcastle I wonder what happened to her.
