One quick answer. Another to come. Monday, 06-Jul-98 18:47:12
Your quick answers is that yes, these boards post EDT. At first I thought that your post was a reference to some of those posts that I have seen that are about as good as "what time is it." I spent about 2 minutes looking for my "Seagull" which is all the time that I have to spend now. After spending about 6 hours at Samuel French, I ended up with a copy -- believe it or not -- of four or five of the major plays all in one soft cover book, for only about 6 bucks. Amazing. Some of the translations, as you know Larry, just are out and outright clunky. The reason that I was hesitant to post the translator of mine, other than lack of time, was simply because other than the "obvious" "bad" ones, reasonable minds differ on this. My teacher, and the other actress of my scene, in fact, preferred a translation that I did not care for at all (that one, I don't think I can come up with the translator, because although I do have those pages somewhere, I don't have that entire translation sitting around). For the heck of it, though, once I get home tonight I will see if I can dig up my "compilation volume" that I thought was pretty darn terrific after basically living at Sam French for a half day and finally selecting one that I cared for. I thought that, for instance, the translation/(interpretation--since that's what it always is) of Uncle Vanya was also first rate. Gotta go for now ... sterling Sterling "Out the Door" Wolfe |
