TeeJay, I think your instincts are absolutely correct on this one.

Cattle calls of this type, as you so well point out, especially when highly publicized are a true "what's wrong with this picture" situation. Never once have I ever seen a "general" call of this type that was anything but a publicity stunt.

And no ... I don't confess to be the most avid TV watcher in america, but no ... I have heard nothing of such calls in L.A.

The exceptions to this rule are 1) Kids -- where sometimes national searches are actually legit on occasion; 2) extremely unusual types (e.g., the guys missing limbs who were required to do Braveheart; 3) Spielburg films (e.g., Memoirs of a Geisha, being cast right now with international "cattle calls," but sure as heck not at malls.

A quick off the point story on the last one. Shortly after I graduated high school, I responded to one of the tiniest ads in the history of the world seeking actors for a student film that I thought sounded like fun, from the incredibly minimal description they gave.

To make a long story short, the role in this student film? Er ... uh ... it was the role that eventually went to Michael J. Fox in a little heard of film called "Back to the Future." My best guess would be that it would have been after Eric Stolz left the role for "creative difficulties," but before the part when to Mike.

Bottom line? If anybody wants to give me 1,000 to one odds that this is nothing that you should bother be involved in, I would be glad to take them, as I believe your skepticism to be dead on the money.

P.S. Liked the John Casablanca reference. Alternatively, perhaps it's a "John Robert Powers" production. : )

    best,
