it is not a happy feeling, but if you are naive which I WAS, it is very exciting to start to see your dream come true ... and a few hundred bucks doesn't seem that much when you are faced with promises. I'm not really an expert or anything, but I've learned to be more careful. Find out exactly who this person is and what he is claiming. If he is claiming to be a manager or an agent, all legit managers and agents NEVER ask for money. If they want the money to take pictures, discuss with the "manager" what kind of pictures he is looking for and then research a good photographer on your own. If he doesn't let you find your own photographer, then something smells fishy. If your niece really does have "it" and this guy seems questionable. Take her to a legit modeling agency that is known in New York or research some agencies and submit to them ... if she really has "it," then perhaps another agent will also show interest. Then you have options. You can decide which agent to go with. Never leave yourself with just one option if at all possible, because then you are at their mercy instead of taking time to make wise decisions. Also, another way to semi- test his legitimacy ... ask for references and ask for time to think about it ... If he is legit, he is more likely to be willing to wait and won't push you. This is an important decision. If he is pushy pushy ... then he probably is getting immediate compensation from you in some way. A legit manager or agent is willing to take the upfront risk ... in some cases (I've heard, not personal experience) for modeling ... if they are really interested in you ... they will put up the money for pictures and you don't have to pay a thing.
