TELEVISION DIRECTOR

WHAT I DO AS A DIRECTOR

I truly enjoy directing and I'm glad I chose it as a career. When I direct, I feel like an artist, I have a blank piece of paper(a blank tape), I begin drawing to create a final picture(the show). Also, I enjoy the challenge of juggling multicameras, VTR decks, cues, talent, sets, and the other different factors. The most satisfaction comes at the end of a show when the production crew, producer, and talent are happy with the quality of the show. I also enjoy freelancing in other production positions.

As a director I feel it is my responsibility to motivate the crew and to get them excited about the show. When it comes to directing, I want the show to be perfect. I call my cues fast, but at the same time I am very clear on what I need. Example: If I wanted to roll a tape source I will never just say, "Roll it!" I will be very specific and give the specific deck, For example "Roll H!" It may seem standard to give the ready cues, but I have seen directors just give the commands, without a ready or a stand by, and this makes it stressful on the crew especially when working with a new crew, so I strive to be as clear as possible.

I have directed all kinds of events: interviews, talk shows, sports, dancers, singers, special events, etc. Also, because I can run a camera I understand what a camera operator goes through to move a camera. I always give the operator enough time to get the shot ready. Because I understand the camera, the operator also respects what I go through when I direct. Since we both understand each other's positions, there is a certain respect between me and the camera operator. This is the same for the other production positions.
