From A Vision Mailing List member:
For those that missed it here is a recap of the NBC Today show interview with Mariah. Matt Lauer did the interview. It lasted a little over 6 minutes.
Mariah. Matt Lauer did the interview. It lasted a little oed first chrous worth of "Honey" video. Then Matt asked her what the 80 million, etc. felt like. Mariah said it is bizarre to think about and that since she has been recording every year since 1990 (vs. others who have put out half as much) it sort of explanis the enormity (I thought it was commendable that she pointed this out). She said she can't focus on the # of #1s and making #1 songs b/c that limits creativity. Matt then asked about songwriting. Mariah said writingis a big part of what she does. She can't imagine just coming in to sing and then leaving. She said in a way she envies them b/c she has to work so much longer and all the weight is on her shoulders. She says she is always learning and that this album is the most real. Matt then asks about the press. Mariah says she realizes fans want to feel closer to her and she feels interviews, shows, and metting fans help that. She says the tabloids and paprazzi cross a line (and that it is a bit hypocritical to say that b/c musicians need the pressto promote them-her words). She says the public is smart and that they know if Mariah is on a page next to a 2-headed baby in Guam that the story is false.
Mariah Carey has admitted that she is too busy for love and has no time to find a boyfriend. The singer, now legally separated from husband Tommy Mottola, denied rumours that she is dating record producer Sean 'Puffy' Coombs, saying: "I'm too busy for that type of thing" Mariah also says her marriage breakup has affected the lyrics on her forthcoming LP Butterfly (due out on September 15): "I'm so close to it"

"MARIAH CAREY: From dull housewife to kick-ass video chick. Sexy is the word."
"One creative change Carey did not make in approaching "Honey" was linking w/ David Morales to reconstruct the song into a hands-in-da-air house anthem...there's no denying that Carey and Morales have a chemistry and kinship that results in records that could not be topped by others."
"Morales has built a festive, handbag-happy, beat that gives the chorus a fluttering urgency that begs for radio attention. Meanwhile, Carey has re-cut her vocal, underlining the song w/ a sassy, seductive, tone that would make a club legend like Donna Summer mighty proud. Although she's turned up the voltage of her performance to match the groove, she continues to dodge the temptation to simply howl."
"She soars to impressive heights, but also plays w/ her words w/ the free-wheeling flow of a jazz musician. In fact, there's one point when she takes the phrase "I need it" and hammers it into a vocal breakdown that rivals Morales' typically aggressive percussion interludes."
"Midway through our first foray into the track's eight-plus minutes, we got lost in fantasies of what will happen when Carey and Morales finally get around to writing together. Stoked and hungry for more? We certainly are. "Honey" previews the new album "Butterfly", which comes out on Sept. 16."
From the Aug. 4 New York Post in Cindy Adams' gossip column:
Free and easy, not much bugs Mariah these days.
Since her marriage went south, Mariah Carey seems suddenly free. Like fresh out of slavery. She's doing all sorts of new things. One's laughing, enjoying. The other is making new friends. so what's a super talented super singer doing over a hot summer weekend?
"Working. And scratching," she said happily. "I have to finish up my album 'Butterfly.' I only have two days to get it done and I'm already behind schedule. Then I'm off to L.A. to do auditions to my video."
Scratching? What scratching? Get back to the scratching part.
"For the video I did a scene down south in Buford in a Forrest Gump location. The one where they said, 'Run Forrest, Run.' And there was a barn with bugs. I'm phobic with bugs. and it was very hot..."
That is, I think that's what Mariah said. A world war was behind her. Music up very loud in the background, people with questions interrupting this so called quite moment she'd pick to call me, her phone, which had bronchitis, was breaking up, and she was talking quickly. "I'll call you back from a landline," she kept repeating.
On the landline it was right back to the scratching.
"I hate bugs and beetles and sitting in the barn. I was covered with them. My dermatologist gave me Pramazone and I had a can of bug spray with me but my skin is very sensitive. For anyone else it's a little scratch. With me it's a big thing. If you scratch me you can literally write your name on my skin."
I asked what I considered a semi-intelligent question. Like why put yourself in situations like this?
"I had a scene with a baby foal and I fed him and it was so wonderful. And then I was up in a cherry picker. What can I tell you, it's just me and my big ideas."
Unlike the unapproachable big star image that once was projected about her, Mariah is fun, easy, no attitudes. I loved her. And I'm sure she isn't responsible, but as we hung up, I suddenly realized I was scratching a Mt. Everest-size mosquito bite.
All I have to say is...YES, it's a ballad!!! So Mariah didn't forgot the songs that made her famous.
Molly Meldrum, host of an Australian variety show, will interview Mariah in L.A. Wednesday (Aug. 5). The interview will likely air on Hey Hey It's Saturday Sat. the 9th.
LOS ANGELES, July 31 (Reuter) - Pop singer Mariah Carey, who recently separated from her record mogul husband, has made another big change in her life by splitting with the manager who helped turn her into a worldwide phenomenon.
In a surprise move, Carey underwent a "mutual parting of the way" with Randy Hoffmann a few days ago, the singer's spokeswoman told Reuters Thursday.
Carey has signed with Los Angeles-based management powerhouse, Gallin-Morey, which represents such acts as Dolly Parton and Neil Diamond as well as actresses like Nicole Kidman and Renee Zellweger.
A spokeswoman for Gallin-Morey declined comment, and reaction was not immediately available from either Hoffmann or Carey's Sony Music label, which is headed by her estranged husband Tommy Mottola.
Hoffmann used to work for a management company that Mottola ran before he came to Sony, and teamed up with Carey at the outset of her career. Carey's spokeswoman said the two men were friends, but declined to say if Carey's marital woes contributed to her decision to leave Hoffmann.
Carey and Mottola announced in May that they would undergo a trial separation after four years of marriage. News reports have speculated that Mottola was overly protective of Carey, and that she's now broadening her personal and professional horizons now that she's a single woman.

From The Hollywood Reporter:
Mariah Carey, Sony Music's biggest-selling artist of the 1990s, has parted company with long-time manager Randy Hoffman and signed with Gallin/Morey Management, effective immediately, sources confirmed.
In related news, Carey has also split with her lawyer, Alan Grubman, and has signed to be legally represented by Don Passman.
Hoffman and Carey had been together since the start of her career in 1989.
Sources said Carey signed with Gallin in the hopes of jump-starting her film career. Gallin/Morey has been instrumental in managing Dolly Parton's career. The company also handles Martin Lawrence, Neil Diamond, Nicole Kidman, Kathleen Turner, among many others. Sandy Gallin also co-owns Sandollar Prods., a film and TV production concern that has a first-look theatrical deal with Disney.
Hoffman has had a professional and personal relationship with Carey's
estranged husband, Tommy Mottola, president of Sony Music Entertainment. He once worked at Mottola's management firm, Champion Management, before Mattola left to take over Sony Music.
Sources said the management shift will have no effect on Carey's upcoming release, "Butterfly," scheduled for Sept. 16. The album's first single, "Honey," has already been serviced to radio, MTV and other music outlets.
Carey has sold over 90 million records worldwide. Her last album,
"Daydream," was her biggest to date, scanning more than 7 million in the
United States alone, sources said.
Carey recently set up Crave, her own imprint, at Sony Music.

This whole video is a James Bond type of thing. It starts off saying Agent M something but I was too busy hitting record to read the rest. To start off MC is a prisoner in a big 'ole mansion(The symbolism is dripping here). There is a mob boss guy and the guy who plays Eddie from Malcolm & Eddie is also in the video holding MARIAH hostage. MARIAH actually speaks Spanish! I suppose it could be Italian but it sounds like Spanish. She pleads with this guy to let Her go in Spanish and then he sends his henchmen down to Her. (There are subtitles in English BTW) Well one of the henchman makes, how shall I put it, crude suggestions towards MC and She plays along with him long enough to get out of the restraints that are tying Her to this chair. After he turns his back, She knocks him on the head and then goes for the window. Now this is the part Puffy was talking bout. She dives off the second story window into the pool! Great shot. :) Then once in the pool you can see Her taking off Her dress ,underwater mind you, to reveal a bikini. The dress is black and the bikini is cream colored and they are same ones as in the Star pics. Then once She exits the pool She goes into some room and changes into a black wetsuit/swimsuit kinda thing. All this time those goons are still chasing Her so She goes and hops on Her jet ski and manages to outrun them and force two of them to crash into each other. During this time, their are cutouts to MARIAH on what looks to be a boat dancing with about a dozen other dancers! Yes She actually really is dancing, kind of like a Janet Jackson. You have to see it to believe it!!! Anyway going back to the chase, She evades those goons and goes to an island for another costume change. So the video ends with Agent M accomplishing Her mission by finding Her "Honey", which is the muscular guy I told 'ya about in the last post. Also there with MC and Her "Honey" is MARIAH'S little Jack Russell terrier, Jack. He's jumping up and down just like on Rosie. There were at least 4 costume changes that I left out and many different hairstyles. And if I must say, MARIAH was absolutely gorgeous. She pulls off that sexy without being slutty look better than anyone.
Yes, you read correctly, and no, I'm not kidding. Go to http://www.mariahc.com to hear the ENTIRE song in RealAudio. Sony has two clips of the song in WAV and RealAudio - one is the LP Version, and the other is the Bad Boy Remix. Go to http://www.music.sony.com/Music/ArtistInfo/MariahCarey/content.html to hear these and see the single cover (which is rather risque) and find other information.
Finally, be sure to go to the Message Board to say how you like the song. In my opinion, it is okay, but I can't really tell how great it is because the sound is really choppy on my 14.4 modem. :(.
From the July 19th issue:
Star mentions Mariah three times in this issue. The first is about how great Mariah looks in her new video, calling her a "sexy songbird living it up since splitting from hubby" who is "sultry," "shapely," and "stunning." Mariah reportedly "couldn't resist flaunting her fabulous form around the pool." The second is about how Mariah send her acting demo to TV executives. Star says that she plans on starring in TV beginning with an appearance in Tea Leoni's sitcom "The Naked Truth" next season. Finally, there were two letters concerning Mariah's breakup with Tommy, one blaming Mariah for the separation, the other Tommy.
If anyone has the article, could you please type up the parts about Mariah and send it to me?
From MTV News
If you've seen the super-slick video for "The Rain," you might be wondering where Missy Elliot came from, but if you think the singer/songwriter came out of nowhere with the hit single, think again.
In the past, Elliot has written songs for Jodeci, Aaliyah, and Adina Howard, as well as having sung on tracks with New Edition and MC Lyte. Next week her debut album "Supa Dupa Fly" will hit stores, but she's still giving material to other stars. The latest is Mariah Carey, who's got a new album of her own due in September called "Butterfly."
"Her people called and wanted me and (producer) Timbaland to do a song with her," Missy told MTV News about the union. "So she flew down, I guess in her private jet, to Virginia where me and Timbaland live, and we went to the hotel, and kicked it for the whole night... Just sat in the hotel, and wrote a song called 'Baby Doll' which is hot, it's hot. It looks different because me and Mariah have two separate styles of writing and they come together, it's gonna be something nice."
Next month a single and video called "Honey" should be released off Carey's new album. Next week she'll shoot a second video for the title track, "Butterfly."
