The Gods Of Helgraad

Most of the people of Helgraad are religious and worship one of nine gods. These gods are in essence, the five traditional Gods of the Islands (most commonly worshipped on Caledon and Buvia), and the four new Gods, three of which were introduced by the Empire, and one in recent times. The five traditional Gods are:

Hastik: God of War
Jarvak: God of Fire and The Sun
Nial: Goddess of the Hunt
Bervik: God of the Harvest (and of Beer)
Chinia: The Mountain Lord

The three Imperial Gods are:

Kriokos: the OverGod, King of All Gods (also the God of the Sky)
Justica Lexa: God of Law (and of Land)
Navia: Goddess of Art (and of the Sea)

The new God is:

Davon: The HeroMaster

The Old Gods

The old gods are only worshipped in large numbers on the islands of Caledon and Buvia. On the mainland, their worship is considered 'uncouth.' They are often perceived as vengeful, angry gods, but this is not quite accurate.

Hastik, God of War
Hastik is often regarded as an evil god, and indeed many of his followers are evil (including large numbers of Orcs), but this is oversimplifying the situation. He is the God of War and is worshipped by Warriors, but he is as much the God of Honour and Chivalry as he is of Conquest and Terror.

Hastik has normal clerics and specialty priests, although both are very rare. To be a specialty priests requires a base strength score of at least 13. His specialty priests have the following powers:

Major Access to: All, Astral, Combat, Guardian, Healing, Protection, War
Minor Access to: Animal, Summoning, Wards

A specialty priest of Hastik rolls d10 for hit points, instead of d8, has the possibility of exceptional strength and uses the hit points bonuses for Warriors. They may use and specialise in the broad sword, if they choose to allocate the necessary proficiency slots. If a specialty priest of Hastik ever builds a stronghold they may attract followers as described in the PHB.

Jarvak, God of Fire and The Sun
Jarvak is the most widely worshipped of the old gods. He is perceived as being a helpful and rewarding god. If you serve him well, you shall be rewarded. If you slight him, you will suffer. Jarvak has both specialty priests and clerics. A base Wisdom of 9 is needed to be either.

Specialty priests of Jarvak have the following powers.

Major Access to: All, Animal, Astral, Chaos, Creation, Fire Elemental, Plant, Sun, Time, Weather
Minor Access to: Charm, Combat, Divination, Healing, Law

They have the ability to Turn Undead, Resist Energy Drain, and Detect Evil as described p57 of Skills & Powers.

Nial, Goddess of the Hunt
Nial is supposed by many to walk the land, and has been reported as having been seen near God's Landing in recent years. Many of her priests claim to have seen her. Whether this is true or not, her faith is becoming increasingly strong in the Barony of Yungia, much to the consternation of the Priests of Kriokos.

Nial's priests are standard AD&D 2nd Edition Druids.

Bervik, God of the Harvest (and of Beer)
The closest thing to a benevolent gods, the ancients had. Bervik is traditionally regarded as a rather ineffectual, bumbling god. He still has his share of worshippers, most notably among the hops farmers of Ursis, and the brewers of Agry. Some of the whisky makers of Holy Maddle have recently embraced his worship.

He has only specialty priests, and a base Charisma of 13 is required to join their number. They have the following powers:

Major Access to: All, Animal, Charm, Creation, Healing, Plant, Sun, Time, Water Elemental, Weather
Minor Access to: Astral, Chaos, Divination, Earth Elemental, Guardian, Protection, Wards

The priests can also Turn Undead, and cast one Cure Light Wounds spell per day in addition to all other spells.

Chinia, The Mountain Lord
Chinia, is the god of the Mountains and of mining. He is a hard god, and a greedy one. So are his priests. Because his priests are normally men scrambling for the tithe (10% of their income), that all his of his worshippers must give to their local priest, no specialty priesthood has ever developed. His priests guard their territory fiercely and may attack any other Priest of Chinia who enters it. The region around the Helg Mountains is the most prized for these priests.

The Imperial Gods

Worship of these Gods was introduced into the land when the Empire colonised it. These gods are the ones predominantly worshipped by the people of the mainland, and almost solely worshipped by the nobility and gentry. Religious piety is very important socially to the Noble classes and they will often seek to outdo their rivals in display of religious fervour.

Kriokos, The OverGod, King of all Gods, God of the Sky
Kriokos is, by far, the most worshipped God, although many of his worshippers are not true believers, merely social climbers (see above). His priests and his worshippers hold that he is the King of All Gods, including Davon and the Old Gods. He has both normal clerics and specialty priests. To be a specialty priest requires a base Intelligence of 9, and a base Wisdom of 10.

His specialty priests have the following powers:

Major Access to: All, Astral, Charm, Divination, Elemental, Guardian, Healing, Law, Wards
Minor Access to: Combat, Creation, Protection.

They can also Detect Evil (see p57 Skills & Powers), attract followers if they build a stronghold, and Turn Undead.

Justica Lexa, God of Law (and of Land)
Justica Lexa is only worshipped by a few people, mostly high nobles and scholars. This god is said to see and know all. There are some rumours that the King worships Justica Lexa in private, although in public he is a staunch worshipper of Kriokos. It is known that the King wishes to set up a court system with these priests as its judges and advocates. Justica Lexa has only specialty priests. A base Intelligence score of 15 is required to join their ranks.

These specialty priests have the following powers: Major Access to: All, Divination, Guardian, Healing, Law, Necromantic, Protection, Summoning, Thought, Wards
Minor Access to: Charm, Combat

In addition they can Detect Evil (see p57 Skills & Powers), Know Alignment once per day, and they may use a short sword.

Navia, Goddess of Art (and of the Sea)
This goddess is not worshipped by many, except Sailors and artists, and she is the Patron of the Royal Navy. She has both specialty priests and clerics. A base Wisdom of 9 is needed to be either.

Her specialty priest have the following powers.

Major Access to: All, Animal, Astral, Creation, Guardian, Healing, Numbers, Protection, Travellers, Water Elemental, Weather
Minor Access to: Air Elemental, Chaos, Divination, Necromantic, Plant, Sun, War, Wards

They can also reduce the casting time of a spell by 1 (all spells must retain a minimum time of 1), and may cast one free Cure Light Wounds spell per day.

The New God

Davon, The HeroMaster
Over recent years, a religious movement built up which worshipped Davon, the founder of Davon's Berm as a God. This was not taken seriously at first by most people, but over the last thirty years, his priests have acquired the ability to cast spells. It requires a base Wisdom of 9 to become one of his priests. Due to the youth of his Church, no specialty priesthood has yet developed, and so all priests of Davon are normal clerics. The tenet of this faith is that all men are protogods, and can become Gods after death.
