Some scenes from the screenplay (final draft, dated March 1, 1985) do not appear in the finished movie, or were substantially revised. Likewise, some scenes from the film did not appear in that version of the screenplay. All important changes are summarized in the chart below.

We see the Walsh residence, located in a lower-income area. It is morning. Andie, a high-school senior, awakens her father, Jack, reminding him that he has something to do today. It is obvious that Andie's mother is out of the picture. Andie leaves for school.   No significant changes

Arriving at school, Andie leaves her car in the "freak" parking lot, which is where the poorer, misfit students gather. She cuts across the "richie" lot to get to the school. The "richies" are the wealthy students, most of whom look down upon the "freaks." One girl, Holly, is nice to Andie, and thanks her for lending her notes from sociology class.

Changes: Blane enters alone, sneaks several looks at Andie while shopping, and selects a record. He obviously wants to do more than talk about music but he can't work up the courage. He pays for the record and leaves.

Andie, Duckie, and Iona go to an upscale mall restaurant for lunch. Andie and Iona feel out of place. Duckie gets a table by taking off his shoe and placing it on the table of several women who are lingering over their coffee.

Andie goes to Cats, a nightclub, with two "freak" friends, Jena and Simon. Jena reacts negatively when Andie sounds her out about whether she would be willing to go out with someone who had money. Andie leaves the nightclub and finds Duckie outside; the bouncer wouldn't let him in. Andie offers Duckie a ride home. On the way, she detours to look at some of the "richie" houses.

Andie is working on a computer at school when a message pops up from an unknown person who wants to talk. She assumes it is Duckie, then finds out it is not. Andie has to leave for work before learning who she is talking to. The audience, however, can see that it is Blane.
 
Changes: When Andie asks if the person knows who she is, a photo of her flashes up on the screen. She wonders who he is; a picture of Blane appears. Andie stands up and looks around. Blane stands up from the terminal across from hers.

Jack realizes she is right, and he has to move on with his life.

Andie goes to school determined to talk to Blane. She corners him in the hall. He lies that he didn't get any of her phone messages. She asks him about the prom, and he makes up the excuse that he had already asked someone else to go. Andie screams at him, trying to make him admit that he doesn't think she is good enough for him. Teachers and students come out of the classrooms to see what is going on. Andie finally runs away. Blane also leaves.

Duckie, who observed the scene with Andie, follows Blane. On the stairs, Blane runs into a triumphant Steff, who tells him that Andie is nothing. Steff continues up the stairs to the hallway, where Duckie attacks him. Duckie is winning the fight when teachers arrive to break it up.

Blane is at the prom with Kate; Steff is with Benny. Andie arrives at the hotel where the prom is being held. She heads toward the entrance, then hesitates. She stops walking, and is about to chicken out, when she looks toward the stairs and sees someone waiting for her. It is Duckie, all dressed up. Andie runs to him. They enter the ballroom together.

Andie and Duckie enter the ballroom. Blane goes over to shake Duckie's hand. Andie says he doesn't need to apologize to her. She and Duckie step onto the dance floor. They both admit that they cannot dance, but they begin to anyway. They don't care what anyone else thinks of them. Watching them dance, Steff and Benny feels like the prom has been ruined for them, but Blane is happy.
 
Changes: When Andie and Duckie enter, Blane starts toward them. Steff stops him and attempts to salvage the situation by casting a slight on Andie's choice of a date. Blane tells him off, then goes up to Andie and Duckie. He shakes hands with Duckie, then apologizes to Andie. He tells her that he always believed in her, but he didn't believe in himself. Telling Andie he loves her, he kisses her on the cheek and leaves. Duckie encourages Andie to go after Blane. She leaves; Duckie glances around the ballroom and notices a girl smiling in his direction. Once he is sure she is looking at him, Duckie goes toward her. Meanwhile, outside, Andie catches up with Blane. They kiss.
