If there is one man who should have been able to live forever, it is Carl Sagan. This movie has everything a perfect movie needs: suspense, drama, humor, action, special effects.
But what sets it apart from other movies is that it makes the viewer think, which is something very few movies do. Never before has watching a movie been a humbling experience, then again, this was Carl Sagan's only movie.
The movie centers around Dr. Eleanor Arroway, played by Jodie Foster, who has spent her entire life trying to reach out to far off places using her radio. Now a radio astronomer, she spends every waking hour trying to find some minute evidence of an extra terestrial existence. Many people frown apon her work including Dr. David Drumlin, played by Tom Skerritt, who is actually an associate of Arroway's. This all ends though when she discovers a radio signal coming from a star very close to Earth. When it is verified that the signal did originate from something extra terrestrial, The government, scientists and the church get into a frenzy. Heading up the church's side is Palmer Joss, played by Matthew McConaughey. The hidden premise of the movie is the argument over how the universe was created. Was it a "Big Bang" as scientists say, or did God create the Earth as the Bible says. No one knows for sure, but what we find out from this movie is that both sides, in essence, believe in the same things. They believe with everything they are and are willing to die to find the truth. I honstly believe this is the best story to come out of Hollywood in years brings only one thing to mind: OSCAR
