G.I. Jane

There are a hundred different things that this movie could have done to shoot itself in the foot, and it did almost none of them. In fact, except for a few things that could have occurred in any movie, this was very well done. It tackled the topic of a woman in the Navy Seals in the only way it should have...with brutal honesty. I respect this film for showing many of the things that we all know would probably really occur in this situation. Despite criticism from a lot of people, I thought Demi Moore did a great job as Lt. Jordan O'Neil. In the movie, O'Neil is the first woman to be accepted into the extremely rough SEALS program. She gets this chance from Senator Lillian DeHaven, played by Anne Bancroft, who really has only her political future in mind. But the best performance was put forth by Viggo Mortensen who played Master Chief John Urgayle. His rigid demeanor and poetic quotations actually makes him the most likable guy you'll ever hate. This movie had a lot to overcome in order to be successful, and it did a superb job.
