I liked this movie, but it could have been so much better. The premise is wonderfully original, and the first half of the movie was great. Then it went down hill some towards the end and eventually wiped itself out. The movie stars Mira Sorvino, as entomologist Susan Tyler, who creates a new species of insects to wipe out the cockroaches that have created an epidemic among the children. The experiment is a success and all is well until it is discovered the the new insects, who were bred to be sterile and live very short lives, are found alive and kicking three years later. (Thanks Jurassic Park) And if that's not enough, they've evolved into something a little different then they were. This was great and I was very intrigued for the first hour, but I think the brains behind the film went a little too far on the evolution of the insect. Sorry, but the interworkings of elevators are a bit much for something with an exoskeleton. Two high points of the film were Charles Dutton as Leonard, the New York cop who unwillingly finds himself deep into something he doesn't like, and F. Murray Abraham as Dr. Gates, Susan Tylers mentor. Dutton puts forth a very funny and likable performance, and Abraham, does what he does best as the stoic professor. This movie would have been much better had they not taken a beautiful premise and stretched it farther then it could go.
