Background Story and Lead Characters

The Sentinel is a one-hour police drama which premiered on UPN in March 1996 and ran for 65 episodes (3 1/2 seasons) until June 1999. Set in the fictitious city of Cascade, Washington, The Sentinel was filmed in the Canadian city of Vancouver, British Columbia. Here's a quickie version of the four main characters of The Sentinel...

Jim EllisonDetective Jim Ellison - played by Richard Burgi, Jim Ellison is a former Army Ranger whose heightened sentinel senses were reactivated during the months he spent in a covert operation in the jungles of Peru. Following his rescue, Ellison returned to Cascade, Washington and joined the police force, eventually becoming a detective in the Major Crimes department. Ellison reluctantly teams up with Blair Sandburg to get help with his sentinel senses, but the two soon become close friends and partners, working together to solve difficult crimes.

Blair SandburgBlair Sandburg - played by Garett Maggart, Blair Sandburg is a graduate student working on his PhD in anthropology at Rainier University in Cascade, Washington. The subject of his thesis is sentinels, and when he discovers Jim Ellison has sentinel abilities he convinces the detective to let Blair observe him in exchange for helping him control his senses. Blair brings a freshness and energy to Ellison's life and the two become close friends and partners.

SimonCaptain Simon Banks - played by Bruce A. Young, Simon Banks is the police captain in charge of Major Crimes, and Jim and Blair's boss. Simon has a tough, hands-on style, knows of Jim's sentinel abilities and uses Jim and Blair to solve the most difficult cases. A good friend to both men, Simon is an integral part of the show's dynamics.

Sci Fi Channel - the cable network (a subsidiary of USA Network) which intermittently airs syndicated rerun episodes of The Sentinel's 4 seasons.
UPN - the network which initially aired The Sentinel's first four seasons.

SOS (Support Our Sentinel)

SOS is the main website which coordinates the Sentinel fans' campaign to keep The Sentinel on the air. Almost all Sentinel webpages display the SOS banner. SOS also makes "official" announcements on the most current developments in our quest to save The Sentinel.

When low overall ratings led UPN to pull The Sentinel from its fall 1998 schedule, Sentinel fans from all over the world pulled together in a major campaign to save the show from cancellation. The letter-writing, faxing, phoning, and press releases finally paid off when UPN ordered 8 new episodes of the show to air as a midseason replacement. The Sentinel is one of the first and few examples of a fan campaign which was successful in saving a television show which had been cancelled. The fan campaign also heralded the power of the internet, which helped connect the international fandom into a cohesive voice towards the network. Although the show wasn't renewed after its fourth season, it found a new home in reruns on The Sci Fi Channel in Fall 1999, where viewers will be able to see Jim and Blair for years to come.
