Bedrooms and Hallways

A film by Rose Troche (GB, 1998),

with Kevin McKidd, Hugo Weaving, Simon Callow, Jennifer Ehle, Harriet Walter, Tom Hollander.

Leo has a little bit of a thing for Brendan. Brendan hasn't recovered yet from a long relationship with Leo's former high school girlfriend, Sally, who doesn't know about Brendan's sexual ambivalence. Of course, Leo and Sally have no clue they both know Brendan! And that's only a small piece of the whole story and a few characters of the many...

Rose Troche's (Go Fish) ever fast-paced rhythm and witty camera depicts in a most delightful way the many relationships of the many characters that evolve in Bedrooms and Hallways. In spite of the numerous similar comedies that have popped up lately here and there, Rose Troche's film turns innovative, sharp and funny. This is definitely an entertaining and refreshing self-deriding comedy backed up by an incisive screenplay. It's a shame the local marketing campaign plays down the impact of the film with a poor artwork -same than Klapisch's Chacun Cherche son Chat by the way- and catch-phrase -complicated and stereotyped at the same time. Eventually, no one actually knows about the witty content of the production, which is just too bad... And nowadays, "A British comedy" is not enough to qualify a film, sorry... Don't you be so lazy guys!...
