Biography
Courteney Cox was born in Birmingham, Alabama, to parents Richard and Courteney. She has a brother named Richard, two sisters, and nine half-brothers and sisters. Her parents divorced in1974, and have both since re-married.
She graduated from Mountain Brook High School in 1982, and went to study at Mount Vernon College in Washington, where she took an architecture/interior design course. During her only year at the colloge, she met Ian Copeland. They became good friends, and later lovers, and it was Ian who persuaded her to try modelling and acting. During the summer she was signed by the Ford modelling agency in New York, with whom she did some magazine shoots, and later some T.V. commercials for, amongst others, the New York Telephone Company.
Her first acting role was in the daytime soap-opera "As the world turns", in 1984. Later that year she also appeared in the Bruce Springsteen video for "Dancing in the Dark", which was her first big step to stardom. A music show called "This Week's Music" followed soon after, which Courteney hosted.
In 1985 she appeared in the NBC series "Misfits of Science" which only lasted four months, but was then cast as Lauren, Michael J. Fox's girlfriend in "Family Ties". This brought her several offers for film work, but none of them did very well at the box office. That was until 1994, when she starred opposite Jim Carrey in the hugely popular and very funny "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective". Soon after, she won the role that we all know and love, Monica.
Courteney has now played Monica Geller in every series of "Friends", although she was originally cast as Rachel (can you imagine that?! Strange thought!). In 1995 she co-hosted the MTV Movie Awards, and most recently she has appeared in the films "Scream", "Scream 2" and "Scream 3". She recently married her co-star in those two films, David Arquette.
